LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The semifinal pairings have been set after a competitive quarterfinal round at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday night.
Two-time NCAA champion and top seed Logan Stieber of Ohio State easily won three matches to reach Saturday’s semifinals at 141, where he will face No. 5 Nick Lester of Oklahoma. Stieber scored two pins and a major decision. He won this tournament last year at 133 pounds.
NCAA champion Andrew Howe of Oklahoma also had a strong night, with two pins and a major decision at 174 pounds. Howe, the top seed, will face No. 5 seed Turtgtokh Luvsandorj of Citadel in the semifinals.
Top seeded Nick Gwiazdowski of NC State was upset in the quarterfinals by No. 8 seed and true freshman Adam Coon of Michigan in 3-1 in overtime at 285 pounds. All of the other No. 1 seeds advanced to the semifinals.
A pair of No. 2 seeds were eliminated during the quarterfinals, R.J. Pena of Oregon State at 157 pounds and Kenny Courts of Ohio State at 184 pounds.
Pena, who was a returning champion in Vegas, fell in the quarterfinals to No. 7 Blaise Butler of Virginia. Courts was ahead until the third period, when he was stopped by No. 7 Tim Dudley of Nebraska.
A pair of unseeded wrestlers advanced to the semifinals, Brian Murphy of Michigan at 157 pounds and Ethan Hayes of Virginia at 285 pounds.
Oklahoma placed six wrestlers in the semifinals to take the team lead with 84.5 points. Nebraska was in second with five semifinalists and 75 points. Michigan is in third with four semifinalists and 72.5 points. Cornell is in fourth with five semifinalists and 58.5 points, while Northern Iowa is in fifth with three semifinalists and 61.5 points.
The status of No. 2 seed Devin Carter of Virginia Tech is unknown heading into the semifinals. Carter injured his hamstring in a 14-11 quarterfinal win over Joe Spisak of Virginia.
The morning session saw three wrestlers who were seeded in the top four of their weights lose matches.
No. 3 seed Joey Lazor of Northern Iowa was pinned in his first match by unseeded Todd Preston of Harvard in 2:22 at 141 pounds.
No. 3 seed Maxwell Huntley of Michigan fell in his second bout to unseeded Kyle Lux of Northern Iowa at 184 pounds.
Another No. 3 seed, Ty Walz of Virginia Tech, went down in the second round to unseeded Ethan Hayes of Virginia, 4-3.
No. 4 seed Andy McCulley of Wyoming was upset in the second round by unseeded Brian Murphy of Illinois, 7-5 in sudden victory at 157 pounds.
