Reader wins gold and Davis a silver on last day of Hari Ram Grand Prix in India

NEW DELHI, India -- The U.S. closed out the Hari Ram Grand Prix on Sunday with both Americans on the mat winning a medal.


Claiming a gold medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. in men's freestyle was Jon Reader (Ames, Iowa /Sunkist Kids).


Winning a silver medal at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. was Kristie Davis (Mustang, Okla./Gator WC/OCU).


Reader won all four of his bouts on the day, including a 3-0, 4-0 win over Kim Gwan-Uk of Korea in the gold-medal finals. Kim was third in the final Olympic Games Qualifier in Helsinki, Finland, and is a two-time Korean Junior World Team member.


He opened the day with a technical fall over Gael Parvex of Switzerland, 7-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, he stopped Pawan Kumar of India, 4-2, 7-0 then stopped Svanidze of Georgia, 7-1, 6-0.


Reader was a 2011 NCAA champion for Iowa State and is an emerging talent on the Senior level in freestyle.


Davis, a two-time World champion and nine-time World medalist, won her first two bouts of the tournament. She stopped Tatiaa Zakharola of Kazakhstan, 3-0, 1-0 in the quarterfinals, then edged Hiroe Suzuki of Japan, 1-0, 1-0 in the semifinals.


In the gold medal finals, Davis lost to 2009 World silver medalist Burmaa Ochirbat of Mongolia, 0-1, 1-4


It was a strong week for the U.S. athletes, who won seven medals.


Reader won the only gold for the United States. Team USA had five silver medalists: Davis, plus Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./New York AC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Shauna Isbell (Flagstaff, Ariz./Lindenwood) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jenna Burkert (Rocky Point, N.Y./New York AC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) added a bronze medal at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.


The India Wrestling Federation announced a total prize purse of $98,000 with the gold medalists getting $3,000, the silver medalists earning $2,000 and the bronze medalists winning $1,000.
