GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado director of athletics Jay Hinrichs today announced the hiring of assistant coaches in the sports of women's basketball and wrestling.
Dr. Thomas Perkins will join head coach Jaime White's basketball staff beginning on June 1, while Ben VomBaur begins work with head coach Ben Cherrington and the wrestling program on May 10.
VomBaur has been an assistant wrestling coach at Wyoming the past four seasons, helping the Cowboys to their first-ever NCAA West Regional title earlier this season. Wyoming qualified four for the NCAA Championship and has been lauded in several publications for its recruiting the past several years. Most notably were national rankings from W.I.N. Magazine and IntermatWrestle.com, which both ranked the 2008 UW recruiting class #11 in the country. VomBaur and Cherrington wrestled together at Boise State and are looking forward to being on the same team again.
"Ben will be a huge addition to our program and our department" said Cherrington. "He's done a great job at Wyoming and been an important part of their recruiting. He's stolen a few kids from us in the past, so it's nice to have him on the same team now. It was also an important factor that we wrestled together at Boise State. Our wrestlers will finally be hearing the same message from the coaching staff. Ben is a great recruiter and a great person, and I'm very excited to be working with him."
Perkins served as the head women's basketball coach from 1983-1995 at then-Utah Valley Community College before the program transitioned to a four-year, Division I institution (Utah Valley University). While with the Wolverines, he posted a career record of 278-48, winning 10 conference championships, three regional championships and making three appearances in the NJCAA Championship Tournament. He left collegiate coaching to concentrate on his own children, returning to the court in 2003 as the head boy's junior varsity coach at Lone Peak High School in Highland, Utah. During those seven seasons, he helped develop a program that saw the boys varsity team win three state championship titles and five region championships.
"I'm really excited about the experience he's bringing to our program" said White. "He has a great attention to detail, he works hard, and his proven success will be a major factor in our continuing success. It's also nice that I have a previous working relationship with him, which will help in his transition to our staff and Division I."
White played for Perkins at UVCC in 1988-89, where she was named a Kodak All-American under his direction.
