MOSCOW, Russia - The U.S. beat Uzbekistan in the first round of the Freestyle World Cup, 5-2, then dropped a 5-2 decision to Iran in the second round, 5-2 on Saturday.
Winning both of their matches so far were 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) at 85 kg/185 lbs. and 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
The U.S. will complete its Pool B competition with a match against Uzbekistan. Once the pool matches end, there will be matches for first, third and fifth place on Sunday. The U.S. will need to win its match on Saturday morning to guarantee a medal-round appearance.
Against Uzbekistan, the U.S. won the last four matches to put away the victory by a 5-2 margin. The USA actually trailed 2-1 after the first three matches, with a victory by Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Herbert won a tough three-period match over 2008 Olympic silver medalist Soslan Tiguev, 0-2, 7-7, 3-2. Dlagnev also needed three periods to beat Oleg Kalegov, 0-2, 2-0, 2-0.
Other U.S. wins in their first World Cup matches ever were Mike Poeta (Champaign, Ill./Lehigh Valley AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and J.D. Bergman (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
"We shot out of the gate fast against Uzbekistan," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. "The bottom line was our men were ready to wrestle. We got after it and were relentless. Most of all, once we got the momentum we kept it and built on it. Jake Herbert beating a former World and Olympic Medalist by finding his sixth gear to break the guy was the difference. Jake's taking it to another level right now, but he must remember there's a lot of wrestling left. Also, Mike Poeta made big statements not by winning but by how he won. He attacked the guy for the whole match both offensively and counter offensively. His first match in the World Cup was how want to see our American wrestlers start their careers off.
Against Iran, Herbert and Dlagnev were the only winners.
Dlagnev had an impressive win over 2009 World silver medalist Fardin Masoumi of Iran, 0-3, 3-0, 3-0. Herbert defeated 2009 Asian champion Ehsan Naser Lashgari of Iran, 1-3, 4-1, 1-0.
"Don't be fooled by the team score. We flat out are getting better and watching our men compete against Iran gives me confidence we're closing the gap,"said Jones. "Every one of those bouts were winnable and in the end of the day a new rule interpretation that we weren't ready for took us out of two matches. However, we can't be fooled. We got beat on a few small things and it a couple of spots we just weren't determined enough to win a couple of hard fought bouts. We need J.D. Bergman and Shawn Bunch to battle hard in those defining moments and go take the win. If they do, they get their hands raised and we win the dual. Also, I have to point out how great Tervel Dlagnev was today. He has been looking forward to this match for a long time, he put the time in, studied the film, created a super game plan, and beat the Iranian, who is a multiple-medalist."
The U.S. will have a tremendous challenge in round three against Azerbaijan, which placed second at the World Championships last year. Azerbaijan also enters the match with a 1-1 record, after losing to Iran and beating Uzbekistan.
"Overall, we are only half way thru The Cup. We must stay focused on tomorrow, take care of the little things. If we get a little tougher, a little saltier, and, most of all, wrestle like the American team can, we'll take home a trophy," said Jones.
