J.D. Bergman has emerged as the No. 1 wrestler in this division after putting together a strong season.
Bergman knocked off 2009 World Team member and two-time NCAA champion Jake Varner in the finals of the U.S. Open.
Bergman now advances to the best-of-3 final-round series for the World Team Trials on June 11-12 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Bergman will face the winner of the Challenge Tournament for the World Team spot.
Expect Varner to come back strong now that he's switching to a full-time freestyle focus after just completing his college career at Iowa State. Varner reached the quarterfinals of the World Championships last year and now is training full-time with his coach and mentor, Cael Sanderson, in State College, Pa.
Pat Cummins has moved down to this weight class and has wrestled well. He was third in the Open.
Brandon Halsey took fifth in the Open, followed by Sonny Yohn and Brent Jones. Chris Skretkowicz was seventh.
Past Olympian and World Team member Andy Hrovat is expected to be in the hunt as well. Hrovat placed second to Varner at the 2009 World Team Trials.
Hrovat skipped the Open, but will be back for the Trials. He recently wrestled in the Beat the Streets event in New York City.
