Varner named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for second time this season

IRVING, Texas - Jake Varner (Iowa State) has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season. It is the fourth Conference honor of Varner's career.
Varner was on his game for the dual matchup between the second-ranked Cyclones and No. 3 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. Varner took the mat with the Cyclones down, 15-14, and pinned seventh-ranked Alan Gelogaev at the 4:43 mark by way of a cradle. Iowa State bested OSU, 20-18. The pin was Varner's 10th victory by fall this season. On Jan. 22, he also defeated Oklahoma's sixth-ranked Eric Lapotsky, 9-3 in ISU's 21-12 triumph over the Sooners. The victories improve Varner's record to a pristine 20-0 in his senior campaign.

Matt Wilps Named EWL Wrestler Of The Week

PITTSBURGH "" Pitt sophomore wrestler Matt Wilps was named the Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week, as announced Monday by the league.
Wilps (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) earned two wins on the weekend against Cleveland State and Penn, helping to lead the 18th-ranked Panthers to a 13-1-1 record on the season. Wilps' recognition is the fourth league honor for the Pitt program this year.
At Cleveland State, Wilps pinned Jeff Schuller at 197 in just 2:11 to put Pitt up 37-3 in team scoring. At home against Penn, 19th-ranked Wilps defeated 20th-ranked Micah Burak, 2-1 to improve to a perfect 14-0 in dual matches this season.
Wilps and the Panthers will travel to Millersville Saturday for a 5 p.m. match against the Marauders.
Ty Copsey named Northern Sun Wrestler of the Week

Ty Copsey recorded two big wins to help No. 10 Augustana claim a pair of NSIC duals wins against top 10 opponents. In Augustana's 25-7 win over No. 8 St. Cloud State, Copsey (ranked No. 2 in the nation) defeated No. 6 Lukas Munkelwitz 7-3 in the opening match of the dual. Then on Saturday, Copsey recorded a 13-1 major decision over Minnesota State's John Makabe, amassing 4:04 of riding time in the process to go along with a 2-point near fall and a 3-point near fall. Copsey's win clinched Augustana's 20-15 victory over No. 4 Minnesota State.
Wright named RMAC Wrestler of the Week

Wright was one of two Cowboys to post wins this past week. His first win came against No. 1 Tommy Edgmon from Fort Hays State with a score of 5-0. Wright's second win came against No. 8 Casey Rowell from the University of Central Oklahoma (4-0).
Wright had lost to Rowell the week before at the Lone Star Duals with a score of 4-0. He has defeated three of the top ranked wrestlers in the 125-pound weight-class this season.
It's the second time this season Wright has been named RMAC Wrestler of the Week.

Cheza earns his first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor after scoring a pair of wins over ranked opponents for the Spartans over the weekend. In Friday's matchup against Minnesota, Cheza, ranked 13th in the 149-pound weight class, defeated 18th-ranked Mario Mason, 12-8. The redshirt sophomore followed Friday's win with a 2-0 shutout against 20th-ranked Eric Terrazas from Illinois on Sunday. With the wins, Cheza improves his winning streak to six and is 17-7 on the season.

Palmer helped the No. 4 Buckeyes to a 21-14 victory over No. 13 Penn State on Sunday. In the 149-pound bout featuring a pair of top-five grapplers, it was the third-ranked Palmer who came away with a 5-3 decision over Penn State's Frank Molinaro, ranked fifth nationally. An early first-period takedown and a reversal in the third period gave Palmer the lead for good as he tallied his third win over a top-10 opponent this season and earned his first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honor.

Virginia's Jones named ACC Wrestler of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia 197-pound senior Brent Jones has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after two wins over conference opponents, including the 12th-ranked nationally-ranked wrestler in his weight class.
It is the second ACC Wrestler of the Week honor of the season for Jones, who was also named on Nov. 17.
The now 19th-ranked Jones picked up two wins for Virginia last weekend, including an upset of Dennis Drury of North Carolina - one of only two wins by an ACC wrestler over a ranked foe last week (the other was Virginia's Shawn Harris' 5-4 upset of No. 6 Thomas Scotton at 157 in the UNC match). Jones also posted a 13-5 major decision against Virginia Tech's Chris Penny. Jones improved to 18-8 on the year with his two victories.
ACC teams resume action Friday night with three non-league matches - including a battle between No. 15 Virginia Tech and No. 7 Central Michigan in Blacksburg. No. 19 Virginia travels to Rutgers, while 11th-ranked Maryland wrestles at George Mason.
Saturday finds both Duke and North Carolina wrestling in the Appalachian State Open at Boone, N.C., while Virginia travels to Princeton. Conference action resumes on Sunday, with Duke and Virginia Tech meeting at Glen Allen, Va.
Shippensburg's Dahlheimer named PSAC Wrestler of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Freshman wrestler Keith Dahlheimer (Felton/Red Lion) was named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week on Monday afternoon by conference officials after a breakthrough performance at the 2010 East Region Duals in which he recorded victories by fall in three of his four matches.
Dahlheimer was stellar at 197 pounds, finishing the weekend 3-1 and in his only loss he nearly edged the reigning Division II National Champion. Opening against Newberry's Keeno Griffin, Dahlheimer wrestled one of the most competitive matches of the night but came up short, 7-4. He rebounded with a victory by fall over Belmont Abbey's Tom McGee in 5:51.
On Saturday, Dahlheimer returned to the mat with a pin over Justin Hoover of St. Andrew's Presbyterian in just 36 seconds. However, his most important victory of the weekend came in the finale against Limestone. With Shippensburg trailing the Saints 18-10 heading into the final two bouts, Dahlheimer recorded a pin in 1:12 that set the stage for redshirt freshman Tyler Zittle (Littlestown/Littlestown), who completed the come-from-behind victory over the region's number seven team with a major decision.
Overall, Dahlheimer has compiled a 9-7 record while wrestling at 184 and 197 pounds. He is tied with redshirt senior Nate Nauroth (Quakertown/Quakertown [East Stroudsburg]) for the team lead with six pins and earlier this season placed sixth at 184 pounds during the PSAC Championships.
Reiner named Western Wrestling Conference wrestler of the week

Northern Iowa senior 157-pounder Tyson Reiner (Mitchell, S.D./Mitchell HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced today by the league.
Reiner finished last weekend 2-0 in WWC action, notching wins over Northern Colorado's Justin Gaethje and South Dakota State's Nick Flynn. Gaethje came into the match against Reiner ranked No. 19 in the latest coaches' panel rankings while Reiner was ranked 33rd. Reiner secured a 5-3 victory over Gaethje, allowing Gaethje no takedowns in the match. The following evening Reiner recorded an 18-5 major decision win over SDSU's Flynn to finish the weekend 2-0.
The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
Tovuujav named CAA Wrestler of the Week for second week in a row

Sophomore Mendbagana Tovuujav, ranked 22nd in the nation at 174 pounds in the latest WrestlingReport.com poll, earned Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week honors for the second consecutive week on Tuesday afternoon. Last week, Tovuujav split the award with Hofstra's Ben Clymer.
After posting a perfect 4-0 record at the CAA Duals on Jan. 16, Tovuujav continued his winning ways last week, winning a pair of dual matches on Saturday, Jan. 23 against opponents from Drexel and Missouri. Tovuujav faced a tough test against Missouri, taking on the 10th-ranked wrestler in the nation, Dorian Henderson. Tovuujav easily dispatched of Henderson, winning by major decision, 13-5.
Tovuujav also earned a win against Drexel's Dave Woodall. The Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia native won by decision (12-6) against Woodall to improve to 5-0 in conference dual matches. For the season, Tovuujav's overall record stands at 24-7 with six falls, two technical falls and three major decisions.
Nestor Taffur of Boston University was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. Taffur, a freshman 149 from Bound Brook, N.J., won all three of his matches last week, including a CAA victory against Sacred Heart, improving to 3-0 in the CAA with 12 wins overall.
Mason wrestles again on Friday, Jan. 29 against Maryland. The dual is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the RAC Gym.
Blevins named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State sophomore Kyle Blevins has been selected as the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from January 20-26.
Blevins went 3-0 on the week with two major decisions while wrestling at the 165 weight class. He defeated North Carolina State's Ray Ward to pick up a key major decision in ASU's 22-17 win over the Wolfpack on Wednesday and followed that with another major decision, an 18-4 win over Gardner-Webb's Daved Pelsang. The sophomore capped the week by beating The Citadel's Pierre Frazille, 3-1, to help ASU improve to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon.
Other wrestlers receiving consideration this week were Chattanooga's Niko Brown, VMI's John Pope and Davidson's Tyler Mullen.

John-Martin Cannon named MAC Wrestler of the Week

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo sophomore John-Martin Cannon (Brockport, NY/Brockport) has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week. The 20th nationally-ranked wrestler, posted a 4-0 record to capture the 165-pound title including a decision over 14th ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships on January 23-24 at Cornell University.
Capturing the 165-pound crown at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships, Cannon upset nationally-ranked Kerber of Cornell, 3-1, in overtime. On Saturday, Cannon scored a fall followed by a major decision to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the sophomore posted a 6-4 decision over Matt Kaylor of Binghamton in the second overtime period to reach the championships.
After finishing in third place last year, Cannon earned his first trip to the finals where he would record the biggest victory of his career, defeating Kerber in the first overtime period, 3-1.
For his performance at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, Cannon appeared in the 20th slot in the latest USA Today/Intermat/NWCA Division I Individual National Rankings, marking the first time he has ever been nationally ranked in his career.
Cannon's selection as MAC Wrestler of the Week marks the first time in his career that he has garnered such an honor.
For the season, Cannon holds a 17-11 overall record and 7-5 dual meet record. The sophomore will look to record the 40th overall victory of his career at Saturday's conference home opener.
After spending over a month on the road, the Bulls (7-4-1) will return home on Saturday, January 30 as they host MAC opponent Ohio in their conference home opener at 1:00 pm. On that day, the Bulls and the Division of Athletics will host "Takedown Cancer" to benefit former UB wrestling co-captain and 2008 graduate Jeff Parker as well as Carly's Club in Buffalo, part of the Roswell Park Cancer Center, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, Jeff's hometown.

After posting a perfect 4-0 record at the CAA Duals on Jan. 16, Tovuujav continued his winning ways last week, winning a pair of dual matches on Saturday, Jan. 23 against opponents from Drexel and Missouri. Tovuujav faced a tough test against Missouri, taking on the 10th-ranked wrestler in the nation, Dorian Henderson. Tovuujav easily dispatched of Henderson, winning by major decision, 13-5.
Tovuujav also earned a win against Drexel's Dave Woodall. The Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia native won by decision (12-6) against Woodall to improve to 5-0 in conference dual matches. For the season, Tovuujav's overall record stands at 24-7 with six falls, two technical falls and three major decisions.
Nestor Taffur of Boston University was named the CAA Rookie of the Week. Taffur, a freshman 149 from Bound Brook, N.J., won all three of his matches last week, including a CAA victory against Sacred Heart, improving to 3-0 in the CAA with 12 wins overall.
Mason wrestles again on Friday, Jan. 29 against Maryland. The dual is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the RAC Gym.
Blevins named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State sophomore Kyle Blevins has been selected as the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from January 20-26.
Blevins went 3-0 on the week with two major decisions while wrestling at the 165 weight class. He defeated North Carolina State's Ray Ward to pick up a key major decision in ASU's 22-17 win over the Wolfpack on Wednesday and followed that with another major decision, an 18-4 win over Gardner-Webb's Daved Pelsang. The sophomore capped the week by beating The Citadel's Pierre Frazille, 3-1, to help ASU improve to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the SoCon.
Other wrestlers receiving consideration this week were Chattanooga's Niko Brown, VMI's John Pope and Davidson's Tyler Mullen.

John-Martin Cannon named MAC Wrestler of the Week

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo sophomore John-Martin Cannon (Brockport, NY/Brockport) has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week. The 20th nationally-ranked wrestler, posted a 4-0 record to capture the 165-pound title including a decision over 14th ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships on January 23-24 at Cornell University.
Capturing the 165-pound crown at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships, Cannon upset nationally-ranked Kerber of Cornell, 3-1, in overtime. On Saturday, Cannon scored a fall followed by a major decision to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the sophomore posted a 6-4 decision over Matt Kaylor of Binghamton in the second overtime period to reach the championships.
After finishing in third place last year, Cannon earned his first trip to the finals where he would record the biggest victory of his career, defeating Kerber in the first overtime period, 3-1.
For his performance at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships, Cannon appeared in the 20th slot in the latest USA Today/Intermat/NWCA Division I Individual National Rankings, marking the first time he has ever been nationally ranked in his career.
Cannon's selection as MAC Wrestler of the Week marks the first time in his career that he has garnered such an honor.
For the season, Cannon holds a 17-11 overall record and 7-5 dual meet record. The sophomore will look to record the 40th overall victory of his career at Saturday's conference home opener.
After spending over a month on the road, the Bulls (7-4-1) will return home on Saturday, January 30 as they host MAC opponent Ohio in their conference home opener at 1:00 pm. On that day, the Bulls and the Division of Athletics will host "Takedown Cancer" to benefit former UB wrestling co-captain and 2008 graduate Jeff Parker as well as Carly's Club in Buffalo, part of the Roswell Park Cancer Center, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, Jeff's hometown.
