Wine Named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month
Junior Went Undefeated in December
SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Junior heavyweight Josh Wine of VMI was named Southern Conference Wrestling Athlete of the Month for December, it was announced by the league on Friday morning.
Wine (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) went undefeated in the month, going 7-0 overall and 2-0 in duals. Following his Fall exploits on the gridiron, where he was named Second Team All-Big South Conference, Wine began his season just two weeks following the conclusion of the football schedule. He won his first match of the year, defeating Princeton's Stephen Turner 6-0 in a dual, before providing the deciding points against Gardner-Webb in VMI's 21-15 dual victory a week later.
On Dec. 28, Wine won five matches at the Wilkes Open to capture his first-ever regular season title. The two-time defending Southern Conference champion ran off four straight decisions before scoring a 12-2 major decision in the Championship match.
Wine is now 8-0 on the season with a 3-0 dual record. His career mark currently stands at 31-12, while he is 13-3 in his career in duals. The Keydets return to action on Saturday afternoon, taking on N.C. State in Raleigh at 1 p.m.
