KRASNOYARSK, Russia - The United States fell short of the medal rounds on the final day of men's freestyle wrestling at the respected Ivan Yarygin Memorial International on Sunday.
The U.S. had four athletes competing, as the final two weight classes were contested: 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) won his first two bouts of the day, defeating a Russian opponent, then stopping U.S. competitor Steve Mocco (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) in the second round. He was defeated in his third bout by a Russian competitor, who did not reach the finals, knocking Dlagnev out of medal contention.
Two other U.S. wrestlers won their first match, but were eliminated in their second bout: Mocco and Andy Hrovat (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
The United States did not win a medal during the three-day event.
"We did some great things in this tournament, but we still have many things we need to improve upon to become the best team in the world," said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay. "It's not a clean slate because there are a lot of amazing colors on the canvas; however, there are detail strokes that must take place before our Team can produce a masterpiece."
The Ivan Yarygin Absolute Cup matched the gold medalists from 96 kg and 120 kg in a special challenge match.
