DOMDIDIER, Switzerland - Two U.S. wrestlers won medals on the final day of the Veterans World Freestyle Championships in Switzerland on Sunday.
Competition was in Div. A on the final day of the event.
Winning a silver medal was Octavius Bellamy of River Forest, Ill. (Div. A - 97 kg/213.5 lbs.) and capturing a bronze medal was Kevin Robinson of Melbourne, Fla. (Div A - 63 kg/138.75 lbs.)
Bellamy was defeated in the gold-medal finals by a Russian opponent. Bellamy won the first period, but the Russia came back to win the final two periods in a very close battle.
Robinson was defeated by an opponent from France in the semifinals. He won his bronze-medal match by default.
Over the course of the three day tournament, the United States won 11 medals, including five individual champions.
Germany was the team champion, followed by Germany in second and the United States in third, in a very competitive field.
"Overall, the guys had a great experience" said U.S. team leader and coach Sam Barber. "They competed hard and with a lot of pride. They were all very proud to represent the United States. They are also a great group of guys and it was an honor to work with them."
After the competition Sunday, the U.S. team was scheduled to march in the Switzerland Day parade in Domdidier, then attend the closing banquet for the competition.
