Russia wins European Championships Greco-Roman title

BAKU, Azerbaijan "" Russia won the team title in Greco-Roman at the 2010 European Championships in competition which ended Sunday.

It was a clean sweep for the Russian wrestling program, which also won European team titles in men's freestyle and women's freestyle earlier in the week.

Russia scored 52 team points, well ahead of the field. Russia was led by two individual champion, Ambako Vachade at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Aslanbek Khushtov at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and five total medalists.

Both of the Russian champions were also European champions at their weight class in 2009. Khushtov was also a 2008 Olympic champion.

Turkey and Ukraine were tied in second with 38 points.

Turkey was led by individual champions Nazmi Avluca at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Reza Kayaalp at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Avluca is a two-time World champion, winning titles in 1999 and 2009. Kayaalp has won two Junior World titles.

Ukraine did not have an individual champion, but had three medalists, led by silver medalist Konstantin Balitski at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Azerbaijan had two individual champions in the lightest weights, Elchin Aliev at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Hasan Aliyev at 60 kg/132 lbs., placing the team fourth with 31 points. Hasan Aliyev was a 2009 Junior World champion.

The final individual champion was Alexander Kikinov of Belarus at 74 kg/163 lbs.
