Dieringer, Akui score big wins in ASICS Junior Folkstyle finals; Kroells repeats as Cadet champion

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa "" Many of the nation's most talented young wrestlers were on display in the Junior and Cadet finals at the USA Wrestling ASICS Folkstyle National Championships on Friday.
In one of the most anticipated Junior finals, Alex Dieringer of the Ringers in Wisconsin edged Dylan Ness of the Bloomington Wrestling Club of Minnesota, 6-5 at 145 pounds.
Dieringer hit a headlock for five points early in the match and almost secured a fall. Ness got a late first period reversal, then rode Dieringer out the entire second period. In the third period, the wrestlers started neutral, and Ness scored a takedown with 55 seconds left to close it to 5-4. After cutting Dieringer loose, Ness tried for a takedown. Dieringer was hit for stalling with 19 seconds left, and the bout ended up 6-5 for Dieringer.
Dieringer was a Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last year, while Ness was a Cadet Triple Crown winner, capturing national titles in all three styles, back in 2008.
Another showdown of top talents came in the Junior division at 171 pounds, when Jahwon Akui of Illinois stopped Devin Peterson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., 3-1. Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Akui hit a lateral drop takedown on the edge with five seconds left for victory.
Akui was a 2008 Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, while Peterson was a 2009 Cadet Triple Crown winner.
One of the most decorated athletes in the field, Wisconsin's Jesse Thielke of the Ringers, dominated the Junior field at 125 pounds. In the finals, he defeated Chris Williams of the Bulls Wrestling Club of Illinois, 9-3. Thielke controlled all aspects of the match on the way to a solid win. Thielke was a member of the 2009 U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman team, and has won numerous USA Wrestling age-group national titles.
Two nationally respected wrestlers won their Junior finals by pin, Edwin Cooper, Jr. of the Overtime School of Wrestling in Illinois at 140 pounds and Ravaughn Perkins of the Ready RP Nationals in Nebraska at 160 pounds.
Cooper dominated the whole match before putting away Luke Troxell of the J C Raptors of Kentucky in 4:18. Perkins, a past Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion, only had a small lead over Cooper Moore of Flat Earth, Minn. until late in the third period, when he scored a late takedown and stepped over to secure the fall at the buzzer.
At 112 pounds, 2008 Cadet Nationals freestyle runner-up Freddie Rodriguez of Holt in Michigan won the finals over 2009 Cadet National freestyle fourth-place finisher Derek Elmore of Harlem in Illinois, 15-9. Rodriguez trailed 5-0 early and came back with numerous takedowns to win impressively. Elmore was an ASICS Cadet National Folkstyle champion last year.
The Junior super heavyweight finals went into the second overtime, before Matthew Wyss of the Victory School of Wrestling in Wisconsin edged Taylor Henry of Viroqua of Wisconsin, 3-2. The score was 1-1 in regulation, and both got an escape during the tiebreaker. In the deciding period, Wyss scored an escape with one second left for the win. Henry was an ASICS Folkstyle National champion as a Cadet last year.

- Nick Harrison of Team Overtime-IL at 119 pounds
- Christopher Halblom of Alburnett-IA at 130 pounds

- Joey Kielbasa of the Overtime School of Wrestling-IL at 152 pounds
- Blaize Cabell of the Indee Mat Club-IA at 189 pounds
- Cody Krumwiede of the Waverly Area Wrestling Club-IA at 215 pounds

In the Cadet division, Michael Kroells of the Ghost Riders of Minnesota defended his ASICS Folkstyle Cadet National title from last year with a victory at 215 pounds. He pinned Collin Bevins of Team Express of Iowa in the finals in 3:55. Kroells was the champion at 189 pounds a year ago.
Another of last year's Cadet folkstyle champions was defeated in the finals at 91 pounds when Zach Siegle of the Ghost Riders of Minnesota defeated Jarred Oftedahl of PINnacle of Minnesota, 7-4. Siegle was a 2009 Schoolboy Folkstyle champion, while Oftedhal was a 2009 Cadet Folkstyle champion.
The Ghost Riders club, which is based in Minnesota, was not the only club to claim two individual champions. Also winning a pair of titles was Team Georgia, the Spring Hill WC from Florida and the Simley club from Minnesota.
Team Georgia champions were Darshawn Sharp at 98 pounds and Glenn Climmons at 152 pounds. Sharp pinned Javier Vieyra of the Salina Kids Wrestling Club of Kansas in 48 seconds in the finals. Climmons edged Scott Gibbons of the Scorpion Wrestling Club of Louisiana for the gold medal, 4-3.
Spring Hill WC champions were Cody Ross at 140 pounds and John Dreggors III at 285 pounds. Ross stopped over Abraham Rodriguez of Hermiston in Oregon in the finals, 7-2. Dreggors pinned Isaac Eichmann of Hastings in Minnesota in the finals in 2:00.
Simley champions were Jake Short at 135 pounds and Nick Wanzek at 145 pounds. Short scored a 20-5 technical fall in the finals over Michael Keilen of LAW of Wisconsin. Wanzek edged Tyler McMichael of the Central Wrestling Club of Kansas, 4-3 for the title.
The ASICS Folkstyle Nationals is the first leg of the USA Wrestling Triple Crown on the Kids, Cadet and Junior levels. Climmons was a Triple Crown winner as an Intermediate in 2004 and as a Novice in 2006.
Another two-time Kids Triple Crown winner who captured a Cadet Folkstyle title today was Mitch Sliga of CIA in Indiana, the champion at 189 pounds. Sliga stopped Joey Dedick of the Overtime School of Wrestling of Illinois, 11-5 in the finals. Sliga was an Intermediate Triple Crown winner in 2005 and a Novice Triple Crown winner in 2007.

The Kids divisions begin their competition on Friday night, and the Veterans divisions start competition on Saturday. A total of 1,249 athletes entered the Kids divisions this year, a substantial increase from 941 entries in these divisions last year

In the third period, the wrestlers started neutral, and Ness scored a takedown with 55 seconds left to close it to 5-4. After cutting Dieringer loose, Ness tried for a takedown. Dieringer was hit for stalling with 19 seconds left, and the bout ended up 6-5 for Dieringer.
Dieringer was a Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last year, while Ness was a Cadet Triple Crown winner, capturing national titles in all three styles, back in 2008.
Another showdown of top talents came in the Junior division at 171 pounds, when Jahwon Akui of Illinois stopped Devin Peterson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., 3-1. Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Akui hit a lateral drop takedown on the edge with five seconds left for victory.
Akui was a 2008 Cadet Nationals champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, while Peterson was a 2009 Cadet Triple Crown winner.
One of the most decorated athletes in the field, Wisconsin's Jesse Thielke of the Ringers, dominated the Junior field at 125 pounds. In the finals, he defeated Chris Williams of the Bulls Wrestling Club of Illinois, 9-3. Thielke controlled all aspects of the match on the way to a solid win. Thielke was a member of the 2009 U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman team, and has won numerous USA Wrestling age-group national titles.
Two nationally respected wrestlers won their Junior finals by pin, Edwin Cooper, Jr. of the Overtime School of Wrestling in Illinois at 140 pounds and Ravaughn Perkins of the Ready RP Nationals in Nebraska at 160 pounds.
Cooper dominated the whole match before putting away Luke Troxell of the J C Raptors of Kentucky in 4:18. Perkins, a past Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion, only had a small lead over Cooper Moore of Flat Earth, Minn. until late in the third period, when he scored a late takedown and stepped over to secure the fall at the buzzer.
At 112 pounds, 2008 Cadet Nationals freestyle runner-up Freddie Rodriguez of Holt in Michigan won the finals over 2009 Cadet National freestyle fourth-place finisher Derek Elmore of Harlem in Illinois, 15-9. Rodriguez trailed 5-0 early and came back with numerous takedowns to win impressively. Elmore was an ASICS Cadet National Folkstyle champion last year.
The Junior super heavyweight finals went into the second overtime, before Matthew Wyss of the Victory School of Wrestling in Wisconsin edged Taylor Henry of Viroqua of Wisconsin, 3-2. The score was 1-1 in regulation, and both got an escape during the tiebreaker. In the deciding period, Wyss scored an escape with one second left for the win. Henry was an ASICS Folkstyle National champion as a Cadet last year.

In the Cadet division, Michael Kroells of the Ghost Riders of Minnesota defended his ASICS Folkstyle Cadet National title from last year with a victory at 215 pounds. He pinned Collin Bevins of Team Express of Iowa in the finals in 3:55. Kroells was the champion at 189 pounds a year ago.
Another of last year's Cadet folkstyle champions was defeated in the finals at 91 pounds when Zach Siegle of the Ghost Riders of Minnesota defeated Jarred Oftedahl of PINnacle of Minnesota, 7-4. Siegle was a 2009 Schoolboy Folkstyle champion, while Oftedhal was a 2009 Cadet Folkstyle champion.
The Ghost Riders club, which is based in Minnesota, was not the only club to claim two individual champions. Also winning a pair of titles was Team Georgia, the Spring Hill WC from Florida and the Simley club from Minnesota.
Team Georgia champions were Darshawn Sharp at 98 pounds and Glenn Climmons at 152 pounds. Sharp pinned Javier Vieyra of the Salina Kids Wrestling Club of Kansas in 48 seconds in the finals. Climmons edged Scott Gibbons of the Scorpion Wrestling Club of Louisiana for the gold medal, 4-3.
Spring Hill WC champions were Cody Ross at 140 pounds and John Dreggors III at 285 pounds. Ross stopped over Abraham Rodriguez of Hermiston in Oregon in the finals, 7-2. Dreggors pinned Isaac Eichmann of Hastings in Minnesota in the finals in 2:00.
Simley champions were Jake Short at 135 pounds and Nick Wanzek at 145 pounds. Short scored a 20-5 technical fall in the finals over Michael Keilen of LAW of Wisconsin. Wanzek edged Tyler McMichael of the Central Wrestling Club of Kansas, 4-3 for the title.
The ASICS Folkstyle Nationals is the first leg of the USA Wrestling Triple Crown on the Kids, Cadet and Junior levels. Climmons was a Triple Crown winner as an Intermediate in 2004 and as a Novice in 2006.
Another two-time Kids Triple Crown winner who captured a Cadet Folkstyle title today was Mitch Sliga of CIA in Indiana, the champion at 189 pounds. Sliga stopped Joey Dedick of the Overtime School of Wrestling of Illinois, 11-5 in the finals. Sliga was an Intermediate Triple Crown winner in 2005 and a Novice Triple Crown winner in 2007.
