The 2008 Olympic champion was Carol Huyhn of Canada, a veteran who pulled together a career-best performance. Huynh won a World silver medal in 2001 and a World bronze medal in 2005. She says that she will continue wrestling, but will not be at the 2009 World meet. Her replacement is Lindsay Rushton, who was ninth at the 2009 World Championships.
The reigning World champion is Clarissa Chun of the United States, who had a clutch performance at the World Championships held in Tokyo less than two months after the Olympics. Chun was fifth at the Olympic Games. She has put together a style of wrestling that is very successful at the highest levels. She won the Pan American Championships this year. Chun will be in Herning, looking to defend her title.
Chiharu Icho of Japan, who won the Olympic silver medal in 2004 and 2008, will not be competing this year. Icho also won two World titles in her career. Japan's entry will be Makiko Sakamoto, who was third at the 2009 World meet. Sakamoto lost a close bout to Chun at the World Championships. She won a gold medal at the 2009 Golden Grand Prix finals against a strong field.
Olympic bronze medalist Mariya Stadnyk of Azerbaijan is expected to compete in Denmark. She won the 2009 European Championships and the 2009 Poland Open, a key pre-World tuneup event. The other 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Irini Merlini of Ukraine, is not on the preliminary entry list for the Worlds, replaced by Lyudmyla Balushka, the 2009 World Cup champion. Balushka was third at the Poland Open.
2008 World silver medalist Jyldyz Eshimova-Turtbayeva of Kazakhstan won a silver medal at the 2009 Asian Championships. One of the 2008 World bronze medalists, Guibei Su of China, is not on the preliminary entry list. China is sending Yanan Sun to Denmark.
Russia has submitted two options at this weight, veterans Lilia Kaskarova and Lorisa Oorzhak, both who have medal potential. Oorzak placed second at the 2009 Golden Grand Prix finals. Kaskarova won a bronze medal at the 2009 European Championships. Oorzhak was fifth at the 2004 Olympic Games, and Kaskarova was fifth at the 2005 World Championships.
Estera Dobre of Romania placed second at the 2009 European Championships, and was 10th at the 2008 Olympic Games. Many of the other placewinners from the Olympics do not appear on the preliminary entry list, but they might attend because some nations are not yet registered. They include Tatyana Bakatyuk of Kazakhstan, Vanessa Boubryemm of France, Kim Hyung-Joo of Korea and Ingrid Medrano of El Salvador. Medrano was third at the Pan American Championships in 2009.
Sarianne Savola of Finland placed third at the 2009 European Championships and fifth at the 2009 Poland Open. Sofia Mattsson of Sweden won Junior World titles in both 2006 and 2007.
Others to watch include Mayelis Caripa of Venezuela, Yana Stadnik of Great Britain and Anna Lukasiak of Poland.
