No U.S. medals on final day of Veterans Greco-Roman Worlds in Finland

KOUVOLA, Finland - All three U.S. wrestlers competing on the final day of wrestling were defeated and did not earn medals at the Veterans Greco-Roman Championships on Sunday.

There was competition in Division A (35-40 years old) on Sunday.

Losing their first matches were Tony Piva (Driggs, Idaho/USA Idaho) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Brian Lindsey (Henderson, Nev.) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Jay Turner (Chalfont, Pa.) at 97 kg/214 lbs.

Piva was drawn back into the repechage when his opponent reached the gold-medal finals. He was defeated in a bronze-medal match Alexey Tararnitsev of Russia, 1-2, 0-6 and placed fifth.

Both Lindsey and Turner did not qualify to wrestle back when their opponents did not reach the finals.

Over the three-day tournament, the U.S. captured four medals.

Valentin Kalika (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Valentin Kalika WC) won a gold medal at 69 kg/152 lbs. in Division D (51-55 years old).

Capturing a silver medal at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. in Division E on Friday was James Schartner (Frederick, Md./FIWC). Chris Brown (Boyds, Md./Montgomery County WC), won a bronze medal at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. in Div. D.

The other bronze medalist was Michael Cain of Summerfield, Fla. at 130 kg/286 lbs. in Div. D. Cain passed away while competing on Saturday. He collapsed during his opening round match, but those providing care could not revive him. There were three athletes in his weight class and FILA has awarded a bronze medal to him, which was accepted by his teammates.
