COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Spots on the 2009 U.S. FILA Junior World Team are up for grabs at the 2009 FILA Junior World Team Trials, to be held in OTC Gym 7 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, May 22-23.

FILA Junior athletes are from 17-20 years old. This includes many of the nation's top college underclassmen, as well as the most talented high school athletes.

Champions from the FILA Junior World Team Trials earn the right to represent the USA at the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Ankara, Turkey, August 4-9.

In this competition, the No. 1 seed sits out until the best-of-three championship series, where he faces the winner from the Challenge Tournament held earlier in the day.

Because the FILA Junior World Team Trials is just one week away from next week's Senior World Team Trials, there have been some adjustments to the qualifying procedures from previous years.

In Greco-Roman, FILA Junior Nationals champions who also places in the top seven at the U.S. Senior Nationals has the right to delay the best-of-three series to a later date, tentatively set for the middle of June

FILA Junior Nationals champion Jimmy Chase (Carol Stream, Ill./Pinnacle School of Wrestling) has chosen to delay his championship series at 60 kg/132 lbs. Chase placed seventh at the U.S. Senior Nationals and will compete at the World Team Trials. The winner from the FILA Junior World Team Trials at 60 kg will battle Chase in a Special Wrestle-off Series.

In freestyle, the highest placing FILA Junior age athlete who finished in the top seven at the U.S. Senior Nationals will be placed in the No. 1 seed position at the FILA Junior World Team Trials, moving directly to the Championship Series.

Two U.S. Senior Nationals placewinners who are eligible for the FILA Juniors move into the No. 1 seed position at the FILA Junior World Team Trials: Logan Stieber (Monroeville, Ohio/New York AC) at 55 kg/121.25 lbs. and Andrew Howe (Cedar Lake, Ind./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Stieber placed third and Howe placed sixth at the U.S. Senior Nationals. The FILA Junior national champions at those weight classes will be placed in the Challenge Tournament.

Three members of the 2008 FILA Junior World Greco-Roman Team hold the top spot at their weight classes: Chase, plus Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wis./Dennis Hall/World Gold WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Peter Kowalczuk, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/ 264.5 lbs.

None of the 2008 FILA Junior World Team members in freestyle hold No. 1 positions in the FILA Junior World Team Trials.

However, among those expected in the Challenge Tournament portion of the freestyle tournament is 2008 Junior World bronze medalist Quentin Wright (Bellefonte, Pa./Penn State) at 84 kg/185 lbs. 2008 Junior World Team members Mark Rappo (Holland, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 50 kg/112 lbs. and Tyler Graff (Loveland, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. In addition, 2008 Junior World Team Trials champion Kirk Smith (Boise, Idaho/Bronco WC), who was injured and could not compete at the World Championships last year, returns at 84 kg/185 lbs.

The Greco-Roman competition will be held on Friday, May 22 and the freestyle competition will be held on Saturday, May 23.

Please not that there has been a schedule change for Greco-Roman on Friday. The Championship Series in Greco-Roman will now begin at 12:00 noon, earlier than posted on previous schedules for the event.
