Apprentice School leads after day two of 2009 NCWA Nationals

HAMPTON, VA. -- After day two of the 2009 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships at the Hampton University Convocation Center, the host Apprentice School currently is sitting in first place out of 84 teams with 79.5 points.
Three-time defending champion Grand Valley State is in second place with 79 points, followed by Marion Military Institute (Ala.) with 74.
The Builders have qualified three wrestlers for Saturday morning's semifinals wrestling at 133 pounds, 174 pounds and heavyweight. Three-time champion Grand Valley State also has three qualifiers into the semifinal round at 174 pounds, 235 pounds and also at heavyweight. Marion Military Institute has one semifinalist at 125 pounds.
Grand Valley and Apprentice School will face off in a semifinal at 174 pounds with Charles Mills from Apprentice School facing Richard Doherty of Grand Valley.
84 men's teams competed in the event which consists of student-sponsored and school-sponsored collegiate programs from around the nation.
In the women's division, Yakima Valley Community College leads the nine-team event with 14 points, followed by Simon Fraser College (Canada) with nine points and Pacific College (Oregon) with 6.5 points.
Wrestling begins at 9 am on Saturday with the championship semifinals and the consolation quarterfinals. Consolation semifinals will wrestle at approximately 11:30 and the final round begins at 4 pm at the Hampton University Convocation Center. You can follow the action online at
