TEHRAN, Iran - 2008 University World champion Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) has qualified for a bronze medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on the final day of the 2009 Takhti Cup.
Dlagnev won his first two matches, beating Hadi Parvi of Iran, 3-1, 1-0 and 2005 World bronze medalist Vasyl Tesmynetski of Ukraine, 1-0, 1-3, 1-0. He was defeated in the semifinals by Iran's top heavyweight, 2006 World bronze medalist Fardin Masoumi, by a score of 0-1, 0-1.
Dlagnev's opponent in the bronze-medal match is not yet known. It will be determined in the repechage rounds on Friday evening.
"In his second match against Tesmynetski of Ukraine, Tervel scored a takedown in the third period with just five seconds left," said National Teams Director Mitch Hull. "He lost his semi-final match to Masoumi of Iran, losing the clinch in the first period and dropping the second period, 1-0."
Three other U.S. wrestlers who competed on Friday were defeated. At 60 kg/132 lbs., Coleman Scott (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) won his first match by pin in 29 seconds over Ali Hussein of Iran, but was defeated in the second round.
Losing their opening match of the tournament were Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio/New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Zack Esposito (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Coaching the U.S. team is National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones and Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay.
Attending the tour as a special USA Wrestling delegate is 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, who won the 55 kg/121 lbs. in freestyle wrestling at the Beijing Olympic Games. Cejudo competed in the 2007 Takhti Cup and won a silver medal. He is helping coach and will also attend formal activities on behalf of Team USA.
USA Wrestling sponsored the first American sports team to compete in Iran after an absence of nearly 20 years, when a U.S. freestyle wrestling team competed in the 1998 Takhti Cup.
This is the seventh time a U.S. team has competed in the Takhti Cup (1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009). The U.S. also competed at the 1998 World Championships held in Tehran, Iran.
