Who's News at USA Grappling?

At 125 KG the USA has a huge favorite going into the World Championships, defending champion Jeff Monson.

Jeff is one of the most prolific martial artists out there, always taking the opportunity to compete. Last year he arrived at the FILA World Grappling Championships in Turkey with fresh stitches and bruises from his battle with MMA legend Pedro Rizzo. He still managed to make it, compete well and win the GOLD.

Jeff has fought in the UFC and Pride and won titles in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He got his start as a wrestler at the University of Illinois and later transferred to Oregon State where he won a PAC-10 title.

Some might not think that such a big bruising wrestler-type could have such an intellect but Jeff has his Masters in Psychology. As a hobby, he works with the Industrial Workers of the World to improve human rights and economic equality. It will be great to see "The Snowman" in Switzerland; we believe the temperature will be perfect!

Grappling Around the Globe:

The World Championships are up to 33 countries represented overall and the athlete total is reaching 200. Recently, Canada entered a full Men's team and one Women's competitor. France, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain and the USA are looking to round out the Top 6 teams going in to this event.

What is the triangle choke?

The triangle choke, a.k.a "the triangle," is one of the highest-percentage submissions in Grappling and Jiu-jitsu today. The first one I saw was Royce Gracie vs. Dan Severn in one of the first UFC's. That would be the beginning of many victories in the world of MMA for the triangle.

For many years prior, the triangle had also been used in Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Judo, and Combat Sombo. The triangle choke gets its name by the shape your legs make, when they initiate the dreaded leg-strangulation tactic. This move is a staple of bottom guard players and punishes the top grapplers' weak posture. The bottom grappler locks his legs around the arm and neck of the top grappler, then passes the trapped arm to the side and pulls the head down for a TAP-OUT.
