USA Wrestling has created an exciting new program, the National Team Coaching Apprentice Program, which will provide coaches the chance for professional growth with field experience on an international tour with a U.S. team.

Coaches would travel with a U.S. team competing in one of the three international disciplines (Greco-Roman, men's freestyle, women's freestyle). There are tour opportunities on the FILA Junior and Senior levels in each of the disciplines.

"The National Team Coaching Apprentice Program will provide a tremendous opportunity for USA Wrestling coaches seeking to gain invaluable experience coaching our nation's elite athletes at World and Continental Championship competitions," said Sam Barber, USA Wrestling's National Coaches Education Program Manager. "This will provide a very fun, exciting, and unique means to grow professionally as a coach. This opportunity will afford coaches the chance to learn from the best and brightest coaches in the United States, and will illustrate what is required to compete at the highest level in wrestling."

Coaches would pay for all costs associated with the trip. Coaches selected will be required to attend pre-competition training camp. They will be responsible for all cost associated with their attendance at training camp (housing at the U.S. Olympic Training Center will be determined upon availability).

Coaches will be an official member of the USA delegation and included in all events and activities associated with the completion. They will receive an official team gear package with the trip.

To be eligible, a coach must have attended a USA Wrestling Silver College within the NCEP program, and be progressing toward a Silver or Gold level certification. Coaches must also apply for the USA Wrestling Coaches Pool to be considered for the program.

Coaches who attend a tour as an Apprentice Coach will receive two NCEP credits for their field experience, and will be required to turn in a log of the experience to earn the credits.

At this time, there are 10 international event opportunities for the Coaching Apprentice Program. Included are the Junior Pan American Championships in Mexico and the Senior World Championships in Denmark in all three disciplines. The Junior World Championships in Turkey and the Senior Pan American Championships in Venezuela are available in Greco-Roman and men's freestyle.

The application deadline for this program is April 1, 2009 for the summer competitions. Coaches will need a deposit of 50% of the cost, or cover the cost of the visa and the airfare upfront. The remaining balance is due one month prior to departure. There are no refunds on deposits.

The final approval of Apprentice Coaches will be determined by a committee of the National Team Staff and the Manager of the NCEP.
