For a state that does not have big-time college wrestling programs, the Texas wrestling community has stepped up to help promote and develop college wrestling.

Going into its 12th year, the Lone Star Duals showcases top college programs in a series of dual meets. It is held alongside a major high school championship event in both boys and girls wrestling, along with numerous other promotional activities for the sport.

This year's college event will be held in South Grand Prairie, Texas at the South Grand Prairie High School Coliseum on Saturday, January 3.

Among the Div. I teams featured in the duals are No. 7 Minnesota and No. 11 Oklahoma. From Div. II are No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 6 Central Oklahoma. From Div. III is No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point. From the NAIA is No. 10 Oklahoma City.

The high school tournament has featured many of the top wrestlers in the state, as well as competitors from other states including Oklahoma, Virginia, New Mexico and Louisiana.

Barry Boustead, the tournament director, is expecting this year's event to be very exciting. He points out numerous things that add to the promotion of wrestling at the event, to include:

- Clinics for the athletes are being held by 2000 Olympic champion Brandon Slay and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller, both who were Texas high school wrestlers. The tournament is dedicated to Miller this year, celebrating her bronze-medal victory at the Beijing Olympic Games.
- Time Warner Cable will televise the Minnesota vs. Air Force dual meet, as well as the finals of the boys and girls high school tournaments.
- For the first time, there will be women's college wrestling matches, as club teams from UTA, Texas State and Lock Haven will have matches.
- A USA Wrestling Kids dual meet has been added to the schedule for the first time.

"We are trying to get everybody involved," said Boustead. "This will be a lot of fun."

Oklahoma has wrestled in all 12 Lone Star Duals, as has Brown. Wisconsin has wrestled in all of them except two.

"Every year it changes," said Boustead. "We have had some years with many of the big guns here. With the National Duals so close in timing, it affects us. As the teams get closer to the National Duals, they don't always want the tougher duals this week. But we have colleges here that the fans really want to see."

Boustead pointed at a number of Texas athletes who are on the college teams which are entered.

"We have many Texas kids that wrestle on these teams," said Boustead. "And with Minnesota coming, they have the Yohn brothers on their team. They wrestled here for the Alamosa (Colo.) team that entered our high school division."

The official website will have interactive scoring updates that will allow fans around the nation to follow the action at
