KIEV, Ukraine - Two U.S. wrestlers captured gold medals on the first day of the Ukrainian Memorial International on Saturday.

Winning titles were Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in men's freestyle and Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in women's freestyle.

Dlagnev won four straight matches to claim the title, including a 3-1, 6-0 decision over David Otiashvili of Georgia in the championship finals. Otiashvili was fourth in the 2002 World Championships.

His other wins were over Sergeis Djomins of Latvia, 2-0, 5-0, Andrei Podsevalnicov of Moldova, 4-3, 1-0 and a semifinal victory over Alan Dzampaev of Russia, 1-0, 2-4, 2-0.

Dlagnev was a 2008 University World champion. It is his third international medal this season, after winning a silver at the Dan Kolov International in Bulgaria last week and a gold at the New York AC International Open in November.

"He looked great. He won four tough matches in victory. He wrestled a great tournament. He really stepped it up every match," said Bill Zadick, Assistant National Freestyle Coach.

Pirozhkova, also a 2008 University World champion, had three victories on the way to the title. She defeated Irina Netreba of Ukraine in the finals, 3-1, 2-1. In the semifinals, she had a huge victory over 2008 Olympic silver medalist and 2002 World champion Alena Kartashova of Russia, 1-0, 2-2, 2-1.

"Elena had a good hard fought win over Olympic silver medalist Kartashova of Russia," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "She kept her poise and scored late in the second period to stay in the match. Elena made some great adjustments during the match to stop Kartashova's attack."

Pirozhkova placed eighth in the 2008 World Championships. It is her fourth international tournament victory of the season, including a gold medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial International earlier this month, plus titles at the Hargobind International in Canada and the New York AC International Open in November.

Winning a bronze medal in a very loaded 72 kg/158.5 lbs. weight class in women's wrestling was Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids).

Lee had a 3-1 record in the tournament, including a victory by pin in the bronze-medal match over 2004 Olympic silver medalist Guzel Manyurova of Russia. Her only loss came in the second round, when she was pinned by two-time World bronze medalist Elena Perepelkina of Russia, the eventual champion.

Lee has won two University World titles, and competed on the 2008 U.S. Women's World Team. She won a title at the Dave Schultz Memorial International earlier in the month.

At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Sara Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), placed fifth, losing to Lyudmila Balushka of Ukraine in a bronze-medal match.

The U.S. will have more competitors in both the men's and women's divisions on the final day of action on Sunday.
