Junior Greco Notes

Champions Abound
Five champions return to try to defend their 2008 Junior Greco-Roman Championships and four Cadet champions have moved up to try to claim their first Junior titles. Jake Bellis of Illinois (105), Ryan Mango of Illinois (119), Kendrick Sanders of Florida (152), Kalvin York of Wisconsin (152) and Ethan Lofthouse of Utah (171) all return as Junior Greco champs and as you see above, York and Sanders are at the same weight. Add in Dylan Ness (140), Andrew Campolattano of New Jersey (189), Michael Sojka of Illinois (215) and Evan Craig of Pennsylvania (285) and you've got some star power in the draw.

By the numbers
While Cadet Greco numbers are down, Junior Greco's total entries is 805. Last year, this portion of the tournament drew 790 wrestlers.

With the quickness
Athletes who step to the raised mat in Fargo know they're on display ahead of everyone else. But when the tournament starts, there's the first bout of each respective tournament and those athletes can feel the pressure. The first three matches of Sunday's Junior Greco-Roman tournament ended with falls. At 119, Matt Bystol of Illinois pinned Steve Rieker of Indiana in the second period and Joey Schwartz, also of Illinois, pinned North Carolina's Kyle Narbaugh in the first period. New York's Nick Wilcox then stepped to the mat at 125 pounds and pinned Indiana's Dakota Case in the second period. Three falls in the first three matches on Mat 1. Exciting way to start.

Match Video
The previously mentioned Mat 1 falls have been posted on USA Wrestling's YouTube Channel.

Eye on the Falls
California's singlets this year have "The Rock" sublimated on the back, a reference to Alcatraz. As of 12:30 p.m. CDT, California's been hard as a rock, picking up 15 falls, good enough to lead the rest of the state delegations.
