SPARTANBURG, S.C. - VMI junior Ronnie Ellsworth (Newport News, Va./Menchville H.S.) has been selected as the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from December 9-15.
Ellsworth improved to 5-2 on the season with his 4-1 decision against Gardner-Webb's Travis Porter on Friday night. That win gave him a 2-0 record in duals this season and clinched VMI's 21-15 dual victory against the Bulldogs. Ellsworth, who wrestles at 197 pounds, also currently ranks second on the team in wins.

Minnesota's Ben Berhow named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

Behind a pair of victories, including an upset win over the seventh-ranked grappler in his weight class, Ben Berhow wins his first Wrestler of the Week honor as Minnesota won two duals last week. On Thursday against Nebraska, the Minnesota heavyweight battled No. 7 Tucker Lane into overtime that ended with Berhow taking down Lane for a 9-7 sudden victory, leading the No. 5 Gophers to a 28-14 victory over the No. 12 Cornhuskers. In Sunday's win over Northern Colorado, 11th-ranked Berhow pinned Justin Tuell as Minnesota cruised to a 41-3 win.

Northern Colorado's Justin Gaethje named Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Colorado junior 157-pounder Justin Gaethje (Safford, Ariz./Safford HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced by league officials.
Gaethje won both bouts this week in duals against Ohio and fifth-ranked Minnesota. Against Ohio Gaethje won a thrilling 5-4 decision. Tied at 3-3 with 33 seconds remaining, Gaethje let Clay Tucker out with an optional escape, but was able to get a takedown with two ticks left for the win. Gaethje trailed 4-2 after the first period against Minnesota and closed the distance, lagging behind just 5-4 after the second period to Joe Grygelko. Just three seconds into the final stanza, he knotted the score with an escape then took the lead on a takedown at the 1:53 mark. Grygelko escaped with 20 seconds remaining, but Gaethje had 1:37 of riding time for the 8-6 decision. Gaethje has now won nine of his last 10 bouts and is 17-7 on the year, with his last four losses coming to nationally-ranked wrestlers.
The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.

Ohio U.'s Jacob Ison named MAC Wrestler of the Week

ATHENS, Ohio- Jacob Ison has been named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Ison helped guide to Bobcats (6-0) to three dual-meet victories last week over Northern Colorado, Air Force and the Colorado School of Mines, winning with scores of 33-7, 35-3 and 36-3, respectively.
Ison (Batavia, Oh.) had a great week for the Bobcats, posting a 3-0 record that included two victories by pin. On Wednesday, Ison defeated Northern Colorado's Brandon Kammerzell by a 9-2 decision. He followed that up with Friday victories over Tyler French (former national qualifier) from Air Force and Ryan Swanson from CSM. Ison pinned French in 6:09 and took down Swanson in a mere 67 seconds. With this successful week, Ison improved to 6-0 on the season, with all of his victories coming in dual meets.
The Bobcats will take a brief break from dual meet competition as they will close out the 2009 calendar year with The Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 20) and The Southern Scuffle (Dec. 29-30). Stay tuned to OhioBobcats.com for recaps of these events.
Western State's Donovan McMahill named RMAC Wrestler of the Week

At the Loper Open, Donovan McMahill claimed his second individual title of the season with a 5-0 record. McMahill is ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association national poll. At the Loper open, he defeated Division II's second-ranked wrestler, Jacob Marrs of Nebraska-Omaha, by a 6-4 decision in the finals. He opened the tournament with back-to-back falls against Eric McAllister (Division I Utah Valley) and Joe Haas (Chadron State-Unattached). He also won his third match by a five-point margin against Nebraska-Kearney's Christian Flavin and reached the final with a six-point win against Oklahoma's Keldrick Hall, who competed unattached.
Brester named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week

Senior Craig Brester has been awarded for his outstanding performance as he was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week on Monday by the league office for matches Dec. 7-Dec. 13.
Brester is 13-0 this season and used a pair of impressive victories last week to solidify the second Big 12 weekly award of his career. The Howells, Neb., native pinned Minnesota's Joe Nord (1:10) Thursday night in Minneapolis before defeating his fourth ranked opponent in the past two weeks with an 8-2 decision over No. 9 Tyler Sorenson of South Dakota State on Saturday.
Brester leads the Huskers in victories (13) and pins (6), winning six of his last nine matches by fall, including four pins in under 2 minutes. The 2009 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational champion, Brester also has one technical fall and one major decision to total eight bonus-point victories this season.
Currently ranked No. 2 in the nation at 197 pounds, Brester is a two-time All-American and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2009 Big 12 Championships. His previous Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor came on Feb. 18, 2008 following back-to-back wins over No. 12 T.J. Morrison (Rider) and No. 10 Joe Rovelli (Hofstra).
Brester and the Huskers return home this week for a double-dual against No. 6 Central Michigan and Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at the NU Coliseum. Action begins at 10 a.m., between the Chippewas and Lopers, followed by Nebraska duals vs. Central Michigan and Nebraska-Kearney with 10-minute breaks between each match.

Anthony Zanetta named EWL Wrestler of the Week

PITTSBURGH "" Pitt freshman wrestler Anthony Zanetta has been named the Eastern Wrestling League's wrestler of the week for his efforts against Rutgers and No. 14-ranked Penn State.
Zanetta (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) posted a 7-4 decision over Joseph Langel of Rutgers at 125, before defeating No. 7-ranked Brad Pataky of Penn State, 15-9. The true freshman improves to 5-0 on the dual match season, and has earned his first ranking of the season, moving into the top 20.
In the win over Pataky, Zanetta jumped out to an 8-3 lead after the first period and earned three points for the Panthers as they earned a 19-19 tie against in-state rival Penn State.
Pitt is off until the end of the month when they make their trek to Evanston, Ill. to compete at the Midlands Championships. Action at the two-day event starts on Dec. 29.
Brady Wilson named Northern Sun Wrestler of the Week

St. Paul, Minn. "" The offices of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference have announced that Minnesota State senior heavyweight Brady Wilson (Faribault, Minn.) has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week. It is the first such honor for a Maverick this season.
Wilson posted a 4-0 record to claim the heavyweight title at the St. Cloud State Husky Open this past weekend. Wilson rolled into the finals with three falls, the first in 32 seconds over Josh Koler of Ridgewater, the second over Carter Ash of Southwest MSU in 3:47 and the third over Chris Brassell of St. Cloud State in 2:12. That performance also earned him the Jack Gause Award at the tournament for most falls. In the championship match, he crafted a 1-0 decision over Andy Witzel of Augsburg who is currently ranked #4 in Division III. Wilson, the top-ranked heavyweight in NCAA Division II, improved his record to 11-4 on the season.
Minnesota State continues its tournament schedule next Sunday, Dec. 20th, with a trip to the Reno Tournament of Champions.
