It was an early morning for the boys. We had a 9 A.M. workout. There is only one practice mat because the other two mats are being used for competition. Wrestling mats is something certainly taken for granted in the USA, but in Nicaragua, a country with only three mats, a wrestling mat is prized thing.
The coaches from Nicaragua presented our athletes with a miniature flag of their nation. In the afternoon, we traveled to Granada for some fun. We took a zip-cord ride through the rain forest which was a blast. Finally, we went to a local market outside Managua, and got to interact with the locals which gave the kids an opportunity to use their Spanish. We are inching closer to competition which the boys are looking forward to.

Well, we arrived in Nicaragua! It was very interesting to see the culture of a foreign nation. Some of these athletes have never left the US, so it was exciting to see their reaction.
We just got our credentials, and had our first meal which, contrary to popular belief, was very similar to American cuisine. We had a light work-out today just to get us back into the grove after seven hours on a plane. There were quite a few spectators watching our work-out since this is the United States has not always sent a team to the Pan-American Cadet Championships.
All the delegates from FILA have been gracious and more than accommodating. Tomorrow is a big day, but the experience is unbelievable.

Trying to prepare for an international tournament is unique compared to anything we have ever encountered. However, the team is excited to represent their country overseas.
The focus of today's practice was match strategy and trying to adapt and prepare for the different styles of wrestling we will encounter. Last minute preparations for tomorrow's trip to Nicaragua are being made.
The team also saw the new G.I. Joe movie to relax and have some fun. We have to be at the airport at 2:30 A.M. so we are going to try to get a few hours of sleep.
More to come tomorrow!

All team members have arrived here in Chicago. Most of the team arrived yesterday, but a few stragglers came in this morning. We had two work-outs today, and both went really well. The team is still getting to know each other, but this group is very energetic and eager to learn.
In addition to our own workouts, we are keeping track of the Junior World Team competing in Turkey. Our head freestyle coach Matt Hampton is currently on that trip and will be joining us tomorrow evening.
Finally, we took in some of the sights of Chicago, visiting the Sears Towers. Being atop of one of the biggest buildings in the world was amazing, and a sight for all to see.
