CANONSBURG, Pa. - The clinic was outstanding, the exhibition wrestling matches competitive and the spirits were high at an Adam Frey Foundation fundraiser at Canon McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Pa., Saturday, Aug 15.
Friends and supporters of Adam Frey showed up at the event to support Frey, the Pittsburgh native and Cornell wrestler, who has been waging a public battle with cancer for more than a year and a half.
Mike Nelson, a wrestling parent from the community and a Frey family friend, said that $5,000 was raised during the event.
The clinic was well received, and featured past NCAA champions Teague Moore of Oklahoma State, Robbie Waller of Oklahoma and Damion Hahn of Minnesota, plus NCAA All-Americans Ray Brinzer of Oklahoma State and Iowa as well as Jay Robison of Edinboro.
The silent auction was a success, netting about $1,000. A Terry Bradshaw-signed football jersey went for $450. A Jake Herbert warmup and shoes went for $100. A variety of Univ. of Minnesota wrestling equipment went for $150. A Cael Sanderson Wheaties box netted $84.
Eight exhibition matches were also held featuring numerous college wrestlers who grew up in the community, many who are friends of the Frey family. All of the matches were filmed and placed on the internet by WrestlingReport.com.
In spite of having spent time in the hospital earlier in the week, Adam Frey was there at the event and had a great time seeing friends and supporters.
"Adam gave a great speech," said Nelson. "He was a real trooper."

Organizers were hoping for a larger turnout, but are committed to doing the event again next year. They will determine if there is a better time of the year to hold the fundraiser, and what new things will be included in the program.
"We will reload and do it again," said Nelson. "I am in!!"
Nelson said that there may be other items up for auction from the event, and information will be placed on the Adam Frey Foundation website at:
