The U.S. women's freestyle team faced Poland in a dual meet in a Zgozleski region of Poland, which is not far from the German border.
It took seven hours to reach this location by bus, as the two teams travelled together from SPALA, the Poland Olympic Training Center in Warsaw.
The United States won the dual meet, 6-1 in front of a packed gymnasium of enthusiastic fans.
Two U.S. wrestlers won two bouts in the dual meet, Elena Pirozkhova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) and Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), both who are members of the 2009 U.S. Women's World Team.
Pirozkhova defeated reigning European champion and two-time World bronze medalist Monica Mihalik-Rogien, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0. Her other victory was against 2008 World bronze medalist Agata Pietrzyk.
Rix defeated Junior World silver medalist Paulina Grabkowska, 1-0, 2-0, then stopped European Junior bronze medalist Katarzyna Krawczyk, 1-0, 7-0.
Other U.S. athletes to win bouts were 2009 U.S. World Team member Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), as well as 2009 U.S. Nationals champion Kelsey Campbell (Milwaukie, Ore./Sunkist Kids).
"We talked about being aggressive and intense and giving the crowd something worth watching," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "For the most part, I think we were pretty intense and fun to watch tonight. I am very proud if how we represented ourselves and our country."
Steiner had tremendous praise for the Polish Wrestling Federation and their hosts at the dual meet for putting on a tremendous event.
"They did an unbelievable job of hosting the dual meet. We got first-class, red carpet treatment," said Steiner.
