Jason Townsend of Athens, Ohio, has accepted the position of Competition Manager for Wrestling for the Youth Olympic Games that will take place in Singapore from August 14-26, 2010. He began his job in August and stay in Singapore until the end of September 2010.
This unique event will bring together Cadets from all over the world to compete in a variety of sports and feature Olympic-level wrestling competitions in Greco-Roman, Men's freestyle, women's freestyle, and Beach Wrestling.
Among his other duties will be to contribute to the development of the newly formed Singapore Wrestling Federation.
"We wish him plenty of success for the great challenge he is about to take up," said FILA President Raphael Martinetti.
Townsend served as USA Wrestling's Manager for Developing Styles for over a year, where he managed USA Wrestling's programs in Grappling, Beach Wrestling and other non-Olympic styles.
"It is a great opportunity to be involved with the historic First Youth Olympic Games as the Wrestling Competition Manager," said Townsend. "My background with USA Wrestling has provided me with the resources and experience necessary to aid me in performing my job effectively in Singapore. I know I can always count on good advice from my friends at USA Wrestling. I will miss being home but I am happy to be involved with such a great event."
Townsend will be stepping down during his time in Singapore from his volunteer position of Head of Grappling Pan-America on FILA's World Grappling Committee. He will reassume this role when his work in Singapore is completed. Taking his position on the World Grappling Committee during Townsend's absence is Clint Kingsbury of Canada.
Townsend was a member of the FILA World Grappling Committee for the last two years, and was instrumental in the development of the FILA rules for Grappling.
He was a coach with the 2007 U.S. Grappling World Team which swept all nine gold medals at the World Wrestling Games in Antalya, Turkey. In his staff role with USA Wrestling, he led the delegation and coached the USA to team titles in both No-Gi and Gi Grappling at the first World Grappling Championships, held in Lucerne, Switzerland in December 2008.
