2009 ASICS University and FILA Cadet Nationals set for April 23-26 in Akron, Ohio

The 2009 ASICS University and FILA Cadet National Championships will be held April 23-26 at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.
This marks the third consecutive year the tournament has been held in Ohio and has been setting record numbers since its debut at Akron in 2007. In 2008, the new records set were in the University freestyle division with 552 participants.
Registration ends Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. CST. To register, visit www.trackwrestling.com.
Returning champions eligible to compete in the University Greco-Roman Nationals include Nikko Triggas at 55 kg/121 lbs., Spenser Mango at 60 kg/132.25 lbs., Bo Beckman at 66 kg/145.5., Jon Drendel at 70 kg/154.25., Andrew Bisek at 74 kg/163 lbs., Chas Betts at 84 kg/185 lbs., Peter Gounaridis at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Erik Nye at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
The University freestyle possible returning champions include Brad Pataky at 55 kg/121 lbs., Daniel Dennis at 60 kg/132 lbs., Reece Humphrey at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Nathaniel Holt at 66 kf/145.5 lbs., Tyler Safratowich at 70 kg/154.25 lbs., Keith Gavin at 74 kg/163 lbs., Mike Galante at 79 kg/174 lbs., Jake Herbert at 84 kg/185 kbs., Brent Jones at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
On the female freestyle side, expected to compete are returning champions Sara Fulp-Allen at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Katherine Fulp-Allen at 51 kg/112 lbs., Cherea Pascua at 55 kg/121 lbs., Deanna Rix at 59 kg/130 lbs., Elena Pirozhkova at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., and Carrie Clark at 77 kg/169.5 lbs.
From the group of 2008 University Nationals champions, Herbert and Pirozhkova won U.S. Senior National titles this year. Mango, Fisher, Gavin, Dlagnev, the Fulp-Allen sisters and Rix were U.S. Senior National runners-up. The U.S. Senior Nationals were held in Las Vegas, April 9-11.
Possible FILA Cadet Greco-Roman 2008 champions returning to the mat include Tyler Fraley at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., Kevin Norstrem at 46 kg/101.25 lbs., and Tony Pena at 50 kg/110 lbs.
FILA Cadet Freestyle champions expected to return to competion at Mark Grey at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., Steven Keith at 50 kg/110 lbs., and Simon Kitzis at 54 kg/119 lbs.
Three time champion Spenser Mango looks to take a fourth title in his divisions. Mike Galante and Andrew Bisek plan to claim their third titles in their divisions.
Competition will be held in the Olympic styles of Greco-Roman and freestyle in both divisions. The University Nationals will feature some of the nation's top college-age wrestlers from both college wrestling programs and the U.S. military team. The FILA Cadet Nationals features many of the best high school wrestlers in the U.S.
University-age athletes are 18-24 years old (Born 1985-91) and the athlete must have graduated from high school. FILA Cadets are 15-17 years old (Born 1992-93, and 1994 with a medical certificate).
Finalists in the Olympic weights only at the University Nationals in both styles qualify to participate in the U.S. Senior World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, May 30-31. The top three place winners at the FILA Cadet Nationals qualify for their state's Cadet Nationals team above the state limit (and must adhere to all state policies).
FILA Cadet and University qualifiers will receive information regarding an international tour opportunity from USA Wrestling's National Developmental coaches upon completion of the event.
