BROCKPORT, N.Y. - After sitting out over four years, Ethan Bosch (Clarion, Pa./Clarion WC) said that wrestling Greco-Roman is "like riding a bike."
Bosch won the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. title and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Northeast Senior Regionals in Greco-Roman on Sunday afternoon.
The athletes who won titles on Sunday have qualified to compete at the World Team Trials, presented by the U.S. Marines, set for Council Bluffs, Iowa, May 30-31.
Bosch was a 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up and 2002 U.S. Nationals champion. He works as an assistant coach at Clarion University.
Bosch has not competed in a match in over four years, since the 2005 Dave Schultz Memorial International. He is a bit undersized at the 211.5 division, weighing at most 205 pounds on a regular basis. He competed at 84 kg/185 lbs. before he retired.
Bosch defeated Moises Hernandez (Top Sail Island, N.C./U.S. Marines) in the championship finals, 2-0, 3-0. Hernandez was an Olympic Trials qualifier last year, and currently holds a No. 4 national ranking in the weight class.
"I felt worse in the first match. I got more tired in that match. I got it out of my system," said Bosch. "He was a little bigger than me. I controlled my position well."
In the bout prior to his finals against Hernandez, Bosch was in the corner helping coach Clarion's graduate assistant coach, Jim Gibson (Clarion, Pa./Clarion WC), who won the 84 kg/185 lbs. title with a victory over unattached David Pelsang, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0.
Bosch is not sure if he will compete again, but knows he will continue to train because Gibson qualified for the World Team Trials.
"I didn't know this was a qualifier until I read about it on the way up here," said Bosch. "Our graduate assistant won at 84 kg, and I think he plans on going. I will train with him. We will see if I'll wrestle again. I hadn't planned that far ahead."
It was a great day for the U.S. Marines Corps team, which captured four individual titles. Winning gold medals for the Marines were Jonathan Pattison at 55 kg/121 lbs., Ryan Bridge at 60 kg/132 lbs., Steve Forrest at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Charles Fish at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
"We brought all of our young guys up here," said U.S. Marines coach Dan Hicks. "Pattison and Fish wrestled excellent. Bridge has experience, but he is new to Greco-Roman. Forrest won his weight class. We got four guys through. It was a successful weekend."
Forrest was the most veteran of the U.S. Marines in the field, after winning the 2008 Armed Forces title. He currently holds a No. 6 national ranking. Forrest won three matches on the way to the title, including a 6-0, 2-0 win over Greg Crane of the All-Navy team in the finals.
Pattison stopped Roger Stewart of the New York AC in the finals with a third-period fall. Bridge beat Trey Hicks of the Clarion WC in the finals, 3-0, 1-0. Fish needed three periods to defeat Akil Patterson of the TF Wrestling Club, 0-1, 1-1, 6-0.
The other individual champion was Daniel Caywood (Imperial Beach, Calif./All-Navy) who defeated Matt Holt (Colorado Springs, Colo./unattached) in the finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. with a third-period pin.
