New York's Soria wins first Northeast Regional Junior Champion Belt with wins in three styles
BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Michael Soria of Kings Park, N.Y. was awarded the Northeast Regional Junior Champion Belt for his outstanding performance at the USA Wrestling Northeast Junior Regionals held at SUNY-Brockport over the weekend.
A handsome belt award was provided for the first time to the wrestler who had the best performance at the event, which included Junior Regional Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman and a Junior Folkstyle Festival.
Soria won a gold medal at 98 pounds in all three styles, earning the maximum number of points available for the belt award program.
Soria is a junior at Kings Park High School on Long Island. He was a New York state high school champion this year at 96 pounds. Soria was a member of the New York Cadet National team two summers ago.
Placing second behind Soria in the belt series was Aaron Velasquez of New Jersey. Velasquez won titles at 145 pounds in the Greco-Roman Regional and the Folkstyle Festival, and won a silver medal in the Freestyle Regional.
This was the first year that a Junior Folkstyle Festival was held as part of the Northeast Junior Regional Championships.
