Wrestling Returns To Montana State! Battle In The Big Sky Set For Jan. 2nd, 2009 at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse
Michigan's Wolverines and Oregon State's Beavers Highlight Non-Conference Dual In First NCAA Men's Match At Montana State University Since mid-1980s
The University of Michigan wrestling team will put their school's famous fight song lyrics, 'Champions Of The West', to the test on January 2nd when the Wolverines travel to Montana State University (MSU) to face Oregon State University in a non-conference dual meet at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on the MSU campus.
The match will place major college wrestling on the Montana State campus for the first time since the mid-1980s when the school dropped the sport. Universal Athletic Service, Inc. of Bozeman, Montana, one of the country's most-prominent team dealers and retailers of wrestling gear and apparel, is the event's title sponsor.
The match was conceived by Nate Laslovich and Tony Beardsley, the current and former head wrestling coaches, respectively, at nearby Bozeman High School with help from Greg Miller of Universal Athletic Supply. Montana State University Athletic Director Peter Fields says the match's concept and ultimate fruition was easily executed.
"We (MSU) were asked if we would open Brick Breeden for an event like this if both Oregon State and Michigan could agree on the date. We had no scheduling conflicts. I love wrestling, it was an easy thing to do," said Fields, who relishes the idea that wrestling could return to MSU.
"If we have the opportunity in the future to introduce one male and one female sport, we would look hard at wrestling as a future addition," said Fields, a former college wrestler at the University of Maine-Presque Isle. "The people in Bozeman and Montana love wrestling, they understand wrestling and we've had a lot of good, local wrestlers go on to have very successful collegiate careers."
One such local product is Michigan senior Tyrel Todd (197 lbs), who prepped locally at Bozeman High School. Todd is a two-time NCAA All-American for the Wolverines and one of two Michigan team captains for 2008-09. Todd's father, Jeff, is a former letter-winning wrestler at Montana State University.
Cliff Keen Athletic, the namesake company of former Michigan wrestling coach Cliff Keen, is lending the company's 52-year-heritage as a wrestling consultant and meet organizer to the January 2nd event. Both the Beavers and Wolverines proudly wear Cliff Keen manufactured uniforms, warm-up apparel and protective equipment.
