Mocco to compete in heavyweight prize money tournament in Russia, October 21

Olympian Steve Mocco (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will participate in the Osman Abdurakhmanov Memorial International in Gergebil, Russia, October 21.

This special event will feature only super heavyweight wrestlers who compete in the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. division. Mocco is expected to face many of the top freestyle wrestlers in the world from his weight class at this event.

The champion of this tournament will earn $7,000, with the runner-up earning $5,000 and the bronze medalists earning $3,000.

Mocco will attend this competition after wrestling in two other international events in Russia, the Dmitri Korkin International in Yakutsk, Russia, October 11-12 and the Shamil Oumakhanov International Championships in Khasavurt, Russia, October 18-19. Mocco captured a gold medal at the Dmitri Korkin International this past weekend.

Mocco placed seventh at the 2008 Olympic Games. He has been a four-time U.S. Nationals runner-up. Mocco won NCAA Div. I titles for both Oklahoma State and the Univ. of Iowa. He is originally from North Bergen, N.J.

He will be accompanied by his older brother Joe Mocco, who will serve as his coach at the event.
