Mocco, Paulson win golds on first day of Dimitri Korkin International in Russia

Olympian Steve Mocco (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Trent Paulson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) captured gold medals in their weight classes on the first day of the Dmitri Korkin International Championships in Yakutsk, Russia on Saturday.
Mocco defeated 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan in the championship finals in two straight periods at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. It was Mocco's first competition since competing at the Olympic Games, where he placed seventh. Mocco had a 3-0 record in the tournament.
Paulson won the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. division, defeating Purejav Unurbat in the gold-medal match in three periods. Paulson finished the tournament with a 4-1 record.
The U.S. won three medals on Saturday, as Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) captured a bronze medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a 3-1 record. His only loss came in the semifinal round.
Placing fifth was Nick Simmons (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs, with a 3-2 record. Simmons was defeated in the bronze-medal match by Olympian Naranbaatar Bayaraa of Mongolia.
Three other U.S. wrestlers are scheduled to compete on Sunday. The team is coached by Terry Brands of Colorado Springs, Colo.
