USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, has set or tied records in four major membership categories during the 2007-08 year.
The 2007-08 membership year, which ended on August 31, 2008, set annual records for athletes, coaches, clubs, and sanctioned year.
During the 2007-08 year, USA Wrestling registered 147,014 athlete members, topping the previous mark of 145,145 set during the 2006-07 year.
The number of registered coaches climbed for the 10th straight year. In 2007-08, 22,684 member coaches joined USA Wrestling, which is an increase over the previous record, 21,792, which was set last year.
For the fourth consecutive year, USA Wrestling chartered clubs reached a new level of 3,511. This is a considerable increase over the previous high of 3,293 clubs, which was set in the previous membership year.
Sanctioned events remained at the same record-level, with 1,762 USA Wrestling events again being sanctioned. This is the identical amount of sanctioned events as during the 2006-07 year.
The membership records were possible through the efforts of USA Wrestling's volunteer leaders on the regional, state and local levels, who provided the most comprehensive program of wrestling activities in the nation.
"Setting records in these three main membership categories and tying another category is a tribute to the USA Wrestling volunteers and state leaders that believe in the mission and goals of USA Wrestling," said Mark A. Scott, Director of State Services. "These dedicated people give so much to make sure that wrestling continues to grow at every level across the United States,"
"We believe that with more states using the on-line membership system, our implementation of background screening for our coaches, coupled with our ever-expanding programming and new Team Member option, USA Wrestling will continue to be a leader in the Olympic Movement in the United States," he said.
For the membership year ending August 31, 2008, USA Wrestling is proud to announce that 30 states increased their athlete membership from the year before. Those state organizations and their leaders should be commended for their hard work and effort.
The states with athlete growth this year were: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virgnia, Wisconsin.
A total of 28 states experienced growth in the coach membership category: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wyoming.
