Anti-sporting behaviour during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games: FILA takes disciplinary action
Following the results of the semi-final Greco-Roman wrestling in the category 84 kilos opposing the Italian wrestler Minguzzi vs the Swedish Abrahamian and following the controversy that appeared when, in particular, the Swedish wrestler refused the Bronze medal, the FILA has opened an investigation according to its statutes and regulation.
The Prosecutor and the Sporting Judge who analysed the case and the investigation procedure, have given their decision:
- No mistake can be attributed to the officiating body that made its decision according to the current wrestling rules.
On the other hand,
- For serious lack of Olympic spirit, non-observance of sporting rules and the principle of Fair Play as well as for scandalous behaviour contrary to the ethics of sport at the end of the match by the wrestler and the coach;
- For calumny and insults towards FILA, its managing body, the National Federations, coaches and wrestlers;
- For moral fault and harm to the reputation of the sport of wrestling.
The FILA Judge condemns :
A. The Swedish wrestler Ara ABRAHAMIAN to:
2 years suspension and prohibition to take part in any wrestling competition at international and national level and a 3.000 Swiss Francs fine;
B. The Swedish coach Leo MYLLARI to:
2 years suspension and prohibition to take part in any wrestling competition at international and national level and a 10.000 Swiss Francs fine;
C. The Swedish Wrestling Federation to:
2 years prohibition of organizing any international competition on Swedish territory and a 50.000 Swiss Francs fine.
The present decision comes into effect from the 3rd November 2008 until the 3rd November 2010. Any violation of the present measures will involve the worsening of the sentences.
