COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO - Two members of the 2007 U.S. FILA Junior World Team were able to earn a second trip to the World Championships with victories in their weight classes at the FILA Junior World Team Trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center on Friday night.
Earning a return trip to the World Championships with victories in the best-of-three Championship Series are Tyler Cox of Camel Kids at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Jake Deitchler of Minnesota Storm at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
Four weight classes in men's freestyle and four weight classes in men's Greco-Roman were held on Friday.
The Junior World Championships will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from July 29 to August 3.
Cox, who was fifth in the Junior World Championships last year, defeated 2008 FILA Cadet Nationals champion Ryan Mango of Team St. Louis in two straight matches. Cox won the first math 1-5, 6-0, 9-3 and captured the second match with a second period pin, 2-4, 1:34.
"I am excited. I can't wait to see how I compare to the guys this year, in comparison to last year. I want to get a World medal this year," said Cox. "(National Developmental Coach) Ike Anderson has worked with me on a lot of things this way. He criticizes everything. He is helping get me to where I need to be in order to win a World medal."
Deitchler, who made big news by making the U.S. Senior Nationals finals in April, needed three matches to defeat Esai Dominguez of MWC. Dominguez won the first match, 4-3, 0-6, 1-1. Deitchler rebounded to win the second match, 8-0, 6-0 by technical fall. In the final match, Deitchler dominated again, winning 7-0, 6-0.
"To wrestle is to fight," said Deitchler. "Sometimes you have to scrap to win. I lost the first match. I fought back to win the last two, which I needed to do. My goal is to be th FILA Junior World Champion. I have a lot of work to get there. I am known for my work ethic and my great coaches. I'll do my job in order to get that done."
All four of the FILA Junior Greco-Roman champions were also FILA Junior Nationals champions in Las Vegas in April, and had advanced directly to the Championship Series. The other FILA Junior Nationals champions who won their weight classes on Friday were Jimmy Chase of Pinnacle at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Kyle Dake of Shamrock WC at 60 kg/132 lbs.
Chase, a junior at Glenbard North High School in Illinois, defeated 2008 University Nationals champion Nikko Triggas of Ohio State in two straight bouts. He won the first match 6-0, 6-3 and scored a second period pin in the second bout, 7-0, 1:06.
Chase has had a very strong spring season. He was injured last August and missed five months of wrestling, returning in time to win the state high school title in Illinois. In addition to winning the FILA Junior Nationals in April and today's FILA Junior World Team Trials, Chase was also sixth at 55 kg/121 lbs at the U.S. Senior Nationals. He has qualified to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June.
"I am doing things smarter now," said Chase of his recent success. "In the past, I trained hard, but I trained so hard, I was getting hurt. I am making sure that I am peaking at the right time now. I am also putting in the work to succeed."
Chase has high goals for himself, including winning the FILA Junior World Championships this summer and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June.
"You always want to be number one," said Chase. "I don't want to settle."
Dake won two straight matches over 2007 Junior World Team member Eric Grajales of the Sunkist Kids. Dake captured the first match, 7-0, 8-5, then came back to win the second bout, 3-1, 3-1.
Four freestyle weight classes were also contested. There was only one 2008 University Nationals champion who was able to win on Friday, high school star Quenton Wright of Team Wright from Pennsylvania. Wright won the 74 kg/163 pound title in two straight matches over Andrew Howe of the Overtime School of Wrestling. Wright pinned Howe in the first match in 1:40, then stopped Howe in the second bout, 1-0, 0-1, 4-3.
At 84 kg/185 lbs., Kirk Smith of the Bronco WC defeated University Nationals champion Dustin Kilgore (Golden Pride WC) in two straight bouts. Smith won the first match, 1-0, 2-1 and the second match, 1-1, 7-1. Smith competes for Boise State University.
At 96 kg/211.5 lbs., Oklahoma State wrestler Clayton Foster (Gator WC) won his series in two straight matches, defeating Oregon State wrestler Chad Hanke of the Orange Crush. Foster won the first bout, 4-1, 6-0 and the second bout, 6-0, 3-0.
The 120 kg/264.5 lbs. weight classes went to the third and deciding match, where Clayton Jack of the Orange Crush beat Ben Berhow of the Minnesota Storm, two matches to one. Berhow won the first match and Jack won the second match. In the deciding third match, Jack edged Berhow, 1-1, 1-1, 4-1. Jack competes for Oregon State, while Berhow competes for the Univ. of Minnesota.
There will be four more FILA Junior Greco-Roman weight classes contested on Saturday and three more University weight classes contested on Saturday.
This event is also being held alongside the University World Team Trials in both styles.
