TEMPE, ARIZ. - The Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club is set to host a U.S. Olympic Team Trials Training Camp May 26-June 1, at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
The camp will take place at the Vic Riches Wrestling Complex and feature many top Senior-level wrestlers in men's freestyle wrestling. The world-class facility at Arizona State has been an incredible resource for Sunkist Kids.
The Sunkist Kids is one of the world's most successful wrestling clubs, developing World and Olympic team athletes for three decades in all three international styles: men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle.
"It's tremendous to have a facility that size," Sunkist Kids Executive Director Kim Martori said. "There are three full mats and three half mats. It allows us to keep all athletes in one location. We have video capabilities with a big screen. Our athletes can review during practice. To have state-of-the-art facility has been such a blessing for us because we do have the opportunity to bring all our athletes in at once."
Expected to attend the event are 2008 U.S. Nationals freestyle champions Ben Askren at 74 kg/163 lbs., Matt Azevedo at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Tommy Rowlands at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., alongside a number of other top Senior-level wrestlers.
"We have some of the top wrestlers in the U.S. and even the world converging on the Arizona State campus to train for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials," Sunkist Kids Coach Zeke Jones said.
This training camp is an important step in the preparation process for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which will be held at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev., June 13-15.
Local media is invited to attend the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club Media Day, Tuesday, May 27 from 3-4 p.m.
Sunkist Kids is excited to bring top-level wrestling to the Arizona State campus.
"Our goal is to put as many Sunkist Kids wrestlers on the Olympic team as possible and bring home some medals," said Jones.
