COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Victoria Anthony's first career matchup against Nicole Woody was not a pleasant one.
Anthony suffered a lopsided loss to Woody in the finals of the 2006 Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. Woody went on to become a Junior World champion in women's freestyle wrestling later that year.
But Anthony has improved dramatically since then. That was evident late Saturday afternoon at the Body Bar Women's Nationals.
The 16-year-old Californian swept Woody 5-1, 5-4 in the FILA Junior finals at 44 kg/97 lbs. at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Anthony won a FILA Cadet title on Friday night at the Body Bar event.
"It was a pretty big win, especially with our history and the way she beat me two years ago," Anthony said. "My main goal now is to go overseas and win a Junior World championship. My confidence is real high right now. I just need to keep a positive attitude. If I do that, I will find a way to win."
Woody wasn't the only Junior World champion to fall on Saturday. Maryland's Helen Maroulis knocked off 2007 Junior World champion Whitney Conder 3-2, 0-1, 4-0 in the FILA Junior finals at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. Maroulis, who won a FILA Cadet title on Friday, was named Outstanding Wrestler in the FILA Junior division.
"I lost a close match to Whitney in the quarterfinals at Fargo two years ago," Maroulis said. "It's awesome, it's really exciting to be able to beat her here. I just wrestled smart and tried to slow her down. This gives me a lot of confidence going into Junior Worlds. My goal is definitely to win a World title."
Champions from the Body Bar FILA Junior Women's National Championships earn the right to represent the USA at the FILA Junior World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, on July 29-Aug. 3.
Second-place finishers in FILA Juniors qualify for the 2008 FILA Junior Pan American Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador, on June 20-22.
Anthony, a junior in high school, led 5-0 in the second period before Woody threw her to her back in the final 10 seconds of the match. Anthony avoided being pinned as time ran out.
"I was up and had the match under control, and I probably should have stayed out of the underhook," Anthony said. "I knew I had enough points, even if she put me on my back. But I know I can't let up against somebody like that."
Among the other FILA Junior champions crowned on Saturday were 2007 Junior World silver medalist Tatiana Padilla and 2007 World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe.
Padilla downed Nicole Darrow 3-0, 3-0 in the finals at 59 kg/130 lbs. Lampe swept FILA Cadet champion C.C. Weber 4-0, 2-0 in the FILA Junior finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
