Army wins Armed Forces Championships, qualifies five for Olympic Trials

The U.S. Army won both the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions at the Armed Forces Wrestling Championships March 15-16 in New Orleans, La. The Greco-Roman competition also served at a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
On top of their two team titles, Army won 10 of the 14 gold medals at the competition, as well as claiming five of the seven qualifying spots in Greco-Roman competition.
The U.S. Marine Corps was second in Greco-Roman and the Navy placed second in freestyle.
The big shock in the tournament came in the 120 kg/264.5 lbs. weight class when David Arendt of the Marines pinned World medalist Dremiel Byers at 1:32 in the first period.
Arendt, along with the other gold medalists, has qualified to represent the United States Armed Forces at the World Military Wrestling Championships, September 1-8, in Split, Croatia. Arendt also placed second in Freestyle behind Mark Simmonds of the Navy.
Jermaine Hodge of the Army was the only double winner, taking first place in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Hodge placed first in the 55kg/121 lbs. weight class in both competitions, beating Anthony Brooker of Air Force in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler Miquel Pena of the Marines.
Besides Arendt and Hodge, five other wrestlers qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials for wrestling. Donovan Depatto of the Marines as well as Faruk Sahin, Oscar Wood, Aaron Sieracki, and Deon Hicks of Army will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., June 13-15 to take part in the Olympic Trials.
While the freestyle competition was not used as a qualifier for the Olympic Trials, many of the wrestlers will head for USA Wrestling's National Championships, April 24-26 t the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is a qualifier for the Olympic Trials.
