Four returning champions unbeaten after day one of Junior Freestyle Nationals

FARGO, N.D. - The four returning champions at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Freestyle Championships were undefeated after the first day at the FargoDome on Thursday.
Returning 2007 Junior double champion Max Nowry of Illinois won all four matches at 105 pounds. Nowry is seeking to be a double champion for the second straight year, after claiming the Junior Greco-Roman title on Tuesday for his third career Junior title.
The other three returning Junior National freestyle champions also dominated their early action: Jon Morrison of Illinois (119), Nate Moore of Iowa (130) and Mario Mason of New Jersey (152).
There were three returning 2007 Junior National runners-up in the field. Cody Yohn of Colorado (171) and Eric Thompson of Iowa (285) are unbeaten. Cody Pack of California (112) lost a match to Derek Geiges of South Carolina, 3-3, 1-6, 5-0 and then withdrew from the tournament.
Six 2007 Cadet National champions remain unbeaten: Alan Waters of Missouri (112), Logan Stieber of Ohio (125), Josh Kindig of Pennsylvania (135), Dylan Alton of Pennsylvania (135), Andrew Alton of Pennsylvania (140) and Brandon Rolnick of New Jersey (152).
In the evening session, 2007 Cadet national champion Jonathan Becker of New Jersey (189) lost a fourth-round bout to Cody Mangrum of Ohio. In addition, Cadet National champion Kyle Caylor of Kansas was beaten by Brandon Pavlik of Pennsylvania by fall.
Among the other athletes to suffer losses were FILA Cadet National champions Sean Boylan of Delaware (105), Anthony Pike of Arizona (215) and Jeremy Johnson of Ohio (275).
Two of the 2008 Junior Greco-Roman champions withdrew from the competition on Thursday: Cole Schmitt of Wisconsin and Kendrick Sanders of Florida, both at 145 pounds. Schmitt moved up in weight from 140 pounds for this tournament.
