MOUNT PLEASANT - Tom Borrelli is now the winningest wrestling coach in Central Michigan University history.
The Chippewas' 19-16 victory over Ohio State at National Duals on Saturday was Borrelli's 196th victory as head coach at CMU. He moved ahead of Chick Sherwood, who was 195-126-6 as CMU's head coach from 1969-85.
The Chippewas finished 1-2 overall at National Duals, and Borrelli's record at CMU now stands at 196-87-6 (.689).
Borrelli is in his 17th season at CMU. He has guided the Chippewas to nine Mid-American Conference championships and nine MAC Tournament titles, along with two top-10 and five top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
CMU has won at least 10 duals in 13 of Borrelli's first 16 seasons. Under his tutelage, CMU has produced one national champion, 23 All-Americans, 86 national qualifiers, 54 MAC champions, six MAC Wrestlers of the Year, seven MAC Freshmen of the Year, 32 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic honorees and 42 Academic All-MAC selections.
CMU also has ranked in the top 16 nationally in team grade-point average each of the last 15 seasons. Eleven times during that span the Chippewas ranked in the top 10, including seven times in the top five.
