Mocco eliminated in repechage round at 120 kg in freestyle wrestling

BEIJING, CHINA - Steve Mocco (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was defeated in his repechage match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. and eliminated from medal contention at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium on Thursday evening. It was the final session of wrestling in the Beijing Olympics, and Mocco was the last U.S. wrestler competing in the event.
2006 World bronze medalist Fardin Masoumi of Iran defeated Mocco, 3-1, 4-0 in the repechage match. With Mocco leading 1-0, Massoumi hit a three-point body lock in the final seconds to win the first period. In the second period, after a Massoumi shot and Mocco counter, officials reviewed the video and awarded three points to Massoumi, the key move in the period.
Mocco placed seventh in the weight class in the final standings.
The freestyle competition ended with the United States winning one medal, a gold medal by Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. on Tuesday.
Mocco was competing in his first Olympic Games. This is his first U.S. Senior team. He is originally from N. Bergen, N.J. He was a NCAA champion twice, winning once for Iowa and once for Oklahoma State Univ., and a four-time finalist. His sister Katie is a nationally ranked judo athlete. Mocco is a USOTC resident athlete.
Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) was eliminated at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a loss during the morning session. Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) withdrew at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. for medical reasons.
