MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Members of the Cornell 1947 NCAA and AAU national championship wrestling team will be recognized at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday, June 1. The ceremony honoring the 60th anniversary of Cornell's accomplishment will begin at 8:30 p.m. A slide show will be presented by wrestling historian Arno Niemand.
On March 28-29, 1947, in Champaign, Ill., the Cornell wrestling team won the all-division NCAA national championship - the only private school ever to accomplish the feat. With an enrollment of 650 students at the time, Cornell is the smallest college to capture the title, snapping a string of seven consecutive titles won by Oklahoma State.
"This is a great story to tell," said Lee Roy Smith, executive director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. "This really demonstrated what a great coach Paul Scott was. He knew how to recruit the type of student-athlete he needed to achieve such a feat. The 1947 championship truly was a milestone. It is one of the greatest feats in college wrestling history."
Recognition of the Cornell team is part of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Honors Weekend June 1-2, where 10 members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
