PUEBLO - The Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System today gave approval to reinstate football, wrestling and women's track and field at Colorado State University - Pueblo.
At its meeting today in Denver, the Board of Governors unanimously endorsed the athletics expansion plan recommended by the President Joseph Garcia of Colorado State University-Pueblo and Larry Penley, the Chancellor of the Colorado State University System.
The approval by the Board means that President Garcia now may negotiate the necessary contracts in conjunction with the General Counsel to effectuate the athletics expansion plan. As part of its endorsement, the Board requested that Garcia and Penley provide timely reports to the Board of Governors as to the progress of the implementation of the athletics expansion plan.
All three sports will begin competition in the fall of 2008 and will compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Football and five other sports were eliminated from then University of Southern Colorado in the spring of 1985 during a reorganization of the University. Men's and women's track and field were cut in 1993, with wrestling disbanded in 2001.
