California Dreamin’: Triggas, Novachkov earn second Junior Greco-Roman Titles

California natives Nikko Triggas and Boris Novachkov each repeated as national champions at an action-packed ASICS/Vaughan Junior National
Greco-Roman Championships at the Fargodome on Monday, July 23.
Triggas, a Moraga, Calif., native, defended his 119-pound title from last year, defeating 2006 Junior Freestyle champ, and possibly future Big Ten rival, Zachary Sanders of Minnesota, 1-2, 5-2, 3-0. Triggas will wrestle for Ohio State next year and Sanders will wrestle for Minnesota next season.
Triggas adds to his impressive Greco-Roman résumé as he won the 2007 Pan American Greco-Roman Championship and was also the 2005 Cadet National Greco-Roman Champion to go along with his title last year.
Novachkov, from Sunnyvale, earned his second Junior Greco-Roman championship by defeating John Trumbetti of New Jersey, 5-2, 1-1 in the 125-pound championship match. Novachkov scored a textbook five-point throw in the first period and held on in the second period to win. Novachkov was the 98-pound champion in 2005.
The Peninsula Wrestling Club, located in Portland, was well represented tonight, taking home two national titles. Oregon's Norman Richmond and Ryland Geiger each won titles at 135 and 189 pounds, respectively.
Richmond held off Jason Chamberlain of Utah for the 135-pound crown, 5-0, 1-3, 2-1. Richmond, a two-time Western Regional champion in Greco-Roman, scored a pair of exciting rolls in the first period and then held on in the final stanza for a 2-1 victory.
Geiger defeated Zac Nielsen of Minnesota in an exciting 0-2, 1-1, 3-1 comeback at 189 pounds. After dropping the first period, Geiger scored a 1-1 second-period win and then scored a match-winning three-point throw with seven seconds remaining in the final stanza. Geiger continues his success in Fargo as he was a Cadet Nationals double champion in 2006.
Jake Deitchler of Minnesota also had to make a comeback in his championship match at 145 pounds, defeating Don Vinson of New York, 1-2, 4-1, 7-0. Deitchler, a Cadet Nationals champion in 2005 and 2006, was named 2007 Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year by Greco-Roman Team USA.
Deitchler helped lead Minnesota to the Wells Fargo Insurance Service Cup as the team champions with 56 points, followed by New York with 52 points and Illinois with 50 points.
Max Nowry of Illinois continued his dominance in the Greco-Roman division in Fargo with a 3-0, 3-0 decision over Cody Pack of California at 98 pounds. Nowry won the Cadet Greco-Roman crown at 91 pounds last year.
A three-time Cadet National champion, David Taylor of Ohio earned his
first Junior championship by defeating BJ Futrell of Illinois, 3-1, 2-3, 7-1 at 105 pounds. Taylor was a Cadet national double champion in 2006 and was a Cadet National freestyle winner in 2005.
Kyle Deberry, a runner-up last year, won his first national title at 160 pounds, beating Alec Ortiz of Oregon, 6-5, 6-0. Deberry placed second at 152 pounds last year and is a three-time Cadet All-American. Deberry was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament after the championships.
Andrew Long beat Donte Butler of Missouri, 2-1, 7-1 at 112 pounds to
secure one of Iowa's two championships for the day. Long, a two-time Iowa state champion from Creston, won the first period on a two-point throw with about 15 seconds remaining before dominating the second period. Long was a Cadet Nationals double champion in 2005 and finished third in the Junior Nationals last year in Greco-Roman.
Dalton Jensen won Iowa's second title, holding off Kelly Kubec of Washington, 1-1, 4-1 at 130 pounds. Jensen, who will be wrestling for
Cael Sanderson and Iowa State next season, scored a two-point throw with just eight seconds remaining in the second period to secure the victory. Jenson has put together an impressive 2007, winning Northern Plains championships in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, as well as a high school state title for Missouri Valley High School.
Kendrick Sanders of Florida upended defending Junior Cadet national champion Esai Dominguez of Iowa, 4-0, 0-6, 4-4 at 140 pounds. Sanders, who will be a junior at South Dade High School next year, was a Florida state champion in 2007 with a 39-1 record as a sophomore.
In a battle of 2006 Junior National Greco-Roman runner-ups, Kevin LeValley of Colorado defeated Jonathan Drendel of Illinois, 3-0, 0-5, 6-2. LeValley was second at 145 pounds last year and Drendel placed runner-up at 140. LeValley, who will attend Bucknell next year, was the 2007 Southern Plains Regional double champion and a four-time state champion for Lymon High School.
Both Montana's and Michigan's lone representatives in the Greco-Roman
championships won national titles in their weight brackets. Montana's Ty Vinson held off Nathan Morgan of New York, 3-1, 0-7, 1-1 at 171 pounds and Marcel Dubose of Michigan defeated Tyrell Fortune of Oregon, 5-4, 4-3 at 215 pounds. Like Norman Richmond and Ryland Geiger, Fortune is a member of the Peninsula Wrestling Club.
In the final match of the evening, heavyweight Peter Kowalczuk of Illinois beat Elijah Madison of Missouri, 3-0, 2-2. Kowalczuk, who was the Illinois state runner-up in 2007, capped off an exciting evening in fitting fashion by doing a cartwheel after his victory.
The Cadet Freestyle Nationals begin on Tuesday, as does the Women's Junior National Duals.
