A group of supporters of the wrestling team at the University of Oregon has created a website and is getting organized to wage a battle to keep the program alive.
On Friday, July 13, the Univ. of Oregon announced that it would drop its Pac-10 wrestling team at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, and would add varsity baseball and competitive cheer.
The website that has been developed is:
http://www.saveoregonwrestling.com
One of the leaders of the effort to save the Oregon program is Kevin Roberts, a two-time All-American wrestler for the Ducks who graduated from Oregon in 1996.
Roberts asks that everybody in the wrestling community sign an on-line petition which is located on the website. The petition requests that the administration at the Univ. of Oregon to reinstate the wrestling program and says that the decision contradicts the mission statement of the Athletic Department (as stated on GoDucks.com).
To read the petition, sign the petition and see the list of supporters, visit:
http://saveoregonwrestling.com/?page_id=6
According to Roberts, the names from this petition will be included in an advertisement which will be placed in local newspapers in Oregon.
"There are a lot of people who want to get organized," said Roberts. "We are recruiting people for a meeting where we can get everybody together in one place."
Wrestling supporter Danielle Hobeika has set up the website, and Roberts and a number of others are putting information together so the wrestling community can stay posted on the efforts to save the Oregon program.
Roberts is now an assistant wrestling coach at Oregon State Univ., the major in-state rival for Oregon in wrestling and all other sports.
"Like all of us, I don't want to see this program go away," said Roberts. "Oregon State needs a rival. I am originally from Washington state. We have 10,000 wrestlers in Washington and not a single four-year college. This entire part of the country needs the Univ. of Oregon wrestling program."
Roberts asks anybody from the region who would attend an organization meeting to contact him directly at:
keviroberts@hotmail.com
"Oregon is a school with a lot of money. Think of the message this decision sends. If this program is dropped, it sets a precident for other schools. We need to make sure that the administration knows that it is not OK," said Roberts.
