Barnes named Outstanding Wrestler at AdvoCare Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D., July 24,

Burke Barnes of Lake Stevens, Wash., the champion at 121 pounds, was named Outstanding Wrestler at the 2000 AdvoCare Cadet National Greco-Roman Championships at Fargo, N.D., July 24. Barnes, a 1999 Cadet National freestyle runner-up, scored an impressive 12-2 technical fall over Eric Tannenbaum of Naperville, Ill., in 3:09. There were no 1999 Cadet National Greco-Roman champions who were able to return to the championship row. However, 1999 Cadet National freestyle champion Tim Kephart of St. Louis, Mo., claimed the 123-pound title. He pinned Derek Moore of Redding, Calif. in 57 seconds. It was the third career Cadet National silver medal for Moore, who won a silver medal in both styles at the 1999 Cadet Nationals. At 167 pounds, Roger Kish of Lapeer, Mich. defeated J.D. Bergman of Oak Harbor, Ohio, 3-0. Kish won his third career Cadet National medal. He was a 1999 Cadet National Greco-Roman runner-up and placed third in freestyle. In a battle of past Cadet All-Americans at 132 pounds, Chase Metcalf of Davison, Mich. beat C.P. Schlatter of Westerville, Ohio, 5-2. Metcalf was fourth in the 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals. Schlatter was a 1999 Cadet National runner-up and freestyle champion. Schlatter avenged his loss in last year's Greco-Roman finals by defeating Zach Lamano of Layton, Utah in the pool finals, 4-1. At 83.5 pounds, Mat Gardner of Springfield, Ore. won by tech. fall over Tony Valdez of Omaha, Neb., 13-3 in 2:54. Gardner was eighth in 1999 Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman. At 88 pounds, Gabriel Mooney of Greenbush, Minn. beat Mike Compton of Willard, Ohio, 5-0. At 94.5 pounds, Kevin Hunter of Orem, Utah used a series of exciting exposures to score technical fall over Drew Headlee of Waynesburg, Pa., 13-0, in 4:00. At 112 pounds, A.J. Lavender of Moline, Ill. opened strongly and defeated Steve Anceravage of Bloomsburg, Pa., 6-2. Nathan Galloway of Boalsburg, Pa. defeated Mitch Kuhlman of Medford, Minn., 11-2 in the finals at 143 pounds. Galloway was seventh in 1999 Cadet Nationals in freestyle. At 154 pounds, Daniel Bedoy of Whiting, Ind. defeated Casey Streeter of Davison, Mich., 5-0. Streeter was sixth in 1999 Cadet Nationals in freestyle In an exciting match at 182.5 pounds, Matt Baumann of Edgar, Wis. edged Jared Massey of Blaine, Minn., 4-3. Grant Miller of Roscoe, Ill. was dominant in the finals at 209 pounds, defeating James Hollis of Turlock, Calif., 8-0. Miller was eighth in the 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals. In an all-Ohio final at 242 pounds, Patrick Barrentine of West Carrolton, Ohio, controlled the entire match to defeat Derrick Bendau of Mayfield Village, Ohio, 8-2. The Most Falls Award went to Alonzo Martinez of Nebraska at 143 pounds, with eight falls in 7:52.
