The Wrestling World Cup announced today its partnership with Banc of California and the LA84 Foundation in support of the 2016 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup, which will be held at The Forum in Inglewood, California on June 11-12, 2016.

The partnership will focus on financial literacy education for underserved youth throughout Southern California, and will provide up to 1,000 participating youth and their families with tickets to this year’s highly-anticipated Wrestling World Cup.

"As a longtime funder of youth wrestling in Southern California, the LA84 Foundation is delighted that so many girls and boys will have an opportunity to see world class athletes leading into the Rio Olympic Games," said Renata Simril, LA84 Foundation President & CEO. "This is the kind of event that inspires young people to dream big."

“We are proud to sponsor the 2016 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup and provide hundreds of California’s underserved youth and their families with the opportunity to see some of the world’s best athletes in action,” said Steven Sugarman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Banc of California. “The Wrestling World Cup is another great opportunity for Banc of California to expand the reach of our financial literacy programming and continue our commitment to California’s diverse communities.”

In 2015, Banc of California received an “Outstanding” rating in its Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) performance evaluation from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Under the CRA, banks are encouraged to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities and the OCC’s evaluation focused on Banc of California’s community development lending, investment, and service record of meeting the credit needs of people living in low- to moderate-income areas.

Banc of California will provide participating youth with financial literacy education to help instill strong financial habits.

“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to serve California’s diverse population and improve financial literacy education,” said Gary Dunn, Executive Vice President and Community Development Officer of Banc of California. “I’m excited to further our mission by partnering with the Wrestling World Cup.”

The Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup is among the sport’s most important annual international competitions, pitting the world’s top eight men’s freestyle wrestling teams against one another. This year, the World Cup will serve as the teams’ final meet before this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Los Angeles has been a fantastic place to host the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup for the last 3 years. We have a passionate fan base here that enjoys and appreciates international wrestling. Los Angeles also provides great corporate support from organizations such as Banc of California who are allowing us to expand our audience to the young people of this city” said Andy Barth, Chair of the 2016 World Cup Organizing Committee.

“USA Wrestling is very grateful for the generous support from the Banc of California, which will allow numerous young people to attend the Wrestling World Cup at the Forum on June 11-12. This event will showcase our men’s freestyle Olympic team, as well as many other Olympians from other nations. Because of Banc of California, numerous youth will have an opportunity to see a preview of the Olympic Games and witness the best of international wrestling,” said Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director.

Ahead of the Wrestling World Cup, the Los Angeles City Council will proclaim June 10 to be “Wrestling Day,” recognizing the United World of Wrestling (UWW) – the international governing body for wrestling – and the 2016 Men’s Freestyle Wrestling World Cup. The city will also honor the participating federation leaders from the United States, Russia, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India and Mongolia, as well as wrestlers throughout the city of Los Angeles. Following the proclamation, the 2016 World Cup Press Conference will be held at the historic LA84 Foundation Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., serving as a kick-off to the weekend’s World Cup festivities. The 2016 World Cup Press Conference will allow senior wrestling officials to discuss the World Cup, the upcoming Rio Summer Olympic Games, the future of wrestling in the Olympics and Los Angeles’ role in hosting major global sporting events.x
