MACON, France – The final four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws for day two the 2016 Junior World Championships.
Wrestling on Wednesday for the U.S. are Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./NMU-OTS), Jamal DeArmond (Marquette, Mich./NMU-OTS), Nick Reenan (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Dynamite WC) and Michael Rogers (Round Rock, Texas/Bison Legend WC).
“Overall it’s a good draw for our guys,” said U.S. coach Ahad Javansalehi. “They are mostly young guys, but I think, hopefully, they will do good. I am looking forward to them performing, doing their best.”
Competing in his third Junior Worlds, Roberts will open at 55 kg/121 lbs. against Jacopo Sandron of Italy. Sandron was fifth in the 2015 Junior European Championships.
Roberts has posted a superb year while attending Northern Michigan with gold medal performances at the Austria Junior Open and University Nationals. He also picked up a bronze medal at the Eduardo Campbell Cup.
Wrestling at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., DeArmond is set to face Switzerland’s three-time Junior World Team member Flavio Freuler in the first round.
Reenan, a four-time USAW Cadet and Junior Nationals champion, is set to face 2014 Cadet Mediterranean champion Ahmed Hassan Ahmed of Egypt in his opener at 84 kg/185 lbs.
The Texas native was a member of the 2014 U.S. Cadet World Team and won gold at the 2015 Junior Pan American Championships in Greco-Roman. Reenan will wrestle collegiately at North Carolina State this fall.
At 120 kg/264.5 lbs. it will be a U.S. versus Russia showdown in the first round with Rogers squaring off against 2016 Junior European silver medalist Nikolai Izmailov. Rogers is wrestling at his first World Championships, but does boast a bronze medal from the 2015 Junior Pan American Championships in Greco-Roman.
“You cannot change anything right now. They’ve got to do what they are best at. As far as physical conditioning goes we are much better than most of the countries I’ve seen. We have to just capitalize on that and just push the pace,” Javansalehi added.
Wednesday’s competition will begin in France at 4 a.m. (ET) with the qualification rounds and repechage followed by the medal matches at 12 p.m. (ET).
