Alan Gelogaev (Moscow, Russia/Oklahoma State University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 3-9.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
The third-ranked Gelogaev downed No. 7 Bobby Telford 10-2 to lift No. 2 Oklahoma State to a 17-16 win over No. 1 Iowa on Saturday night before a crowd of 15,400 fans at Iowa City's Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The win snapped Iowa's record unbeaten dual meet streak of 84 straight matches.
Gelogaev scored a pair of takedowns, a reversal and a three-point near fall in the first match of the dual at heavyweight.
The meet ended in a 16-16 deadlock after each team won five matches, but Oklahoma State won the dual by virtue of most total match points scored. The Cowboys outscored the Hawkeyes 54-49 in the dual.
Gelogaev, a junior, placed seventh at the 2010 NCAA Championships at 197 pounds.
