PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Board of Directors of the Dragon Wrestling Club, a USA Wrestling Olympic Regional Training Center (RTC), has named Kevin McGuigan as the first Executive Director of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Dragon Wrestling Club operates on the campus of Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
McGuigan brings deep experience in athletic administration and operations to the role. He previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Pennsylvania RTC and as the Director of Wrestling Operations at the University of Pennsylvania. Before transitioning to athletic leadership, McGuigan spent 35 years supervising over $100 million in regional mechanical construction projects across the Philadelphia area, including extensive development in University City.
A former NCAA Division I wrestler and coach, McGuigan brings over three decades of coaching experience across nearly every level of the sport. In the mid-1990s, he served as head assistant coach at George Mason University, where he coached a dozen NCAA national qualifiers and an All-American. He has also coached at the high school level, guiding athletes in both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state championship finals, and previously founded and directed a competitive wrestling club in South Jersey.
“I’m excited for this opportunity to work with Coach Azevedo, his staff, the student-athletes, and the administration at Drexel University,” said McGuigan. “I’m also thankful to the Dragon Wrestling Club Board of Directors for the chance to help build something special for dedicated athletes in and around Philadelphia.”
“Kevin McGuigan is one of the most respected and trusted people in the greater Philadelphia wrestling community, and we’re fortunate to have him leading the Dragon Wrestling Club as our new Executive Director,” said Matt Azevedo, Head Coach of Drexel University Wrestling and the Dragon Wrestling Club. “Kevin brings an incredible amount of experience as a coach, administrator, and community leader, but what really sets him apart is the relationships and trust he has built throughout the USA Wrestling and NCAA wrestling communities. He understands the regional and national wrestling landscape and the opportunities we have to grow the Dragon Wrestling Club throughout the northeast and beyond. Most importantly, Kevin is someone who cares deeply about the growth of wrestling in Philadelphia. He has the experience, credibility, and vision to help the Dragon Wrestling Club reach its full potential, and I’m excited to see what he can accomplish in this role.”
“We are excited to welcome Kevin as Executive Director of the Dragon Wrestling Club. This is an important step in the continued growth of our organization and our commitment to strengthening the Drexel Wrestling community,” said Brett Kendall, Board Member and Drexel Wrestling Alum. “Kevin understands that a successful wrestling club/RTC is built not only on the mat, but also through the commitment of our alumni, families, supporters, and the broader wrestling community. We look forward to working with Kevin to strengthen those connections, creating new opportunities, and continuing to support our Drexel Wrestling community.”
